You get paid if you have enough vacation days to cover it. You may be able to use sick leave. No vacation days, no sick leave=no pay check.

Shut it down, you say. Oh! No! My son will be under foot all day, or out playing with the other "shut downs." Neither of which will improve my daughter-in-law's mood.
