PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday there could be a government shutdown next month over security on the border with Mexico, suggesting he could hold up negotiations if no more money is provided for a wall between the two countries.
"Could there be a shut down? There certainly could and it will be about border security, of which the wall is a part," Trump told reporters in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump also said he had given the military the authorization to use lethal force if necessary on the border with Mexico.
"If they have to they are going to use lethal force. I've given the OK - I hope they don't have to."
Trump also warned that the United States could close the whole border with Mexico for a period of time "if we find that it gets to a level where we are going to lose control or our people are going to start getting hurt."
Ahead of U.S. congressional e******ns earlier this month, Trump denounced the approach of a caravan of migrants as an "invasion" that threatened American national security, and he sent thousands of U.S. troops to the border to help secure it.
U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that he had been granted authority to allow troops on the Mexican border greater powers to help protect border officials, and would await direction from the Department of Homeland Security.
Mattis said troops could help protect the border agents with shields and batons, but would be unarmed.
Two U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters this week a memo signed by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly gave Mattis the authority to protect immigration agents and if necessary, could include actions like use of lethal force, crowd control, temporary detention and cursory searches.
Having won control of the House in the e******ns, Democrats said they will be even less motivated than before to meet Trump's wall demands.
Trump has issued ultimatums about wall funding before, with little impact, even with his own Republican Party in majority control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
If the two parties cannot reach a funding deal, there would be a partial government shutdown, with so-called "essential services," including some at the Department of Homeland Security, likely remaining in operation.

Shut it down! So, you won't be able to buy a snow globe at the Washington Monument, or a hat pin from the Capitol. Big deal. The 'essential' part of government will still be there working.

Shut it down, you say. Oh! No! My son will be under foot all day, or out playing with the other "shut downs." Neither of which will improve my daughter-in-law's mood. During warm weather, it would be wonderful. He won't be paid, but during previous shut downs, he has used vacation days. Also, during previous shut downs, he has visited me. He now lives with me.

Trump is NOT going to get his wall, no matter how loud he screams and threatens. If the GOP shuts down the gov't., it's all on them and GOP Senators know that.

What's the big deal about a government shut down? It's shut down now, and will be again at Christmas, and New Year's.
Have you died from it?

Tell that to the millions of gov’t workers and military who won’t get paid, or to all the nat’l. Parks closing.

Shutdowns cost hundreds of millions of dollars. All those furloughed federal workers get paid for lost income, what can't be rec**ped is the lost time that we end up paying for. Shutdowns are meaningless and expensive posturing that serves no purpose.

The GOP started this crap by threatening to shut the government down if they didn't get what they wanted, which at the time was a repeal of Obamacare. Everyone involved in that Cruz action should have been impeached for sabotage, failing to uphold the constitution by using unconstitutional means to accomplish the sabotage of a constitutional law of the land.

Like most ignorant people who say such ridiculous things, you have no comprehension of what the unintended effects of shutdowns can do. In unstable stock market conditions it could inadvertently trigger a full scale meltdown.

They'll get paid for not showing up. And closing National Parks won't cause any deaths. Shut it down.

You get paid if you have enough vacation days to cover it. You may be able to use sick leave. No vacation days, no sick leave=no pay check.

Are you required to take time off at your employers' convenience, not when you want to.
