I was there in 68, don't remember whether it was expensive or not. While there Japan had a major earthquake which rattled the glasses in the bar and repositioned the pool balls somewhat. In both Panama and Okinawa a guy just stood at the bar to Pee, Viet Nam was a trip, a two foot long hole in the concrete for everyone to do both functions and that was if you were in an establishment. The outdoor bars were beach type chairs, a canopy, a cooler right on the street and a tree. Complete with the occasional rocket going over head. With the first rocket I got up to run and a buddy grabbed my shirt sat me back down and asked me where I thought the next one was going to hit. He was right, just enjoy your PBR or Schlitz and enjoy the show. Mike

I really enjoyed the food also. I had just turned 18 in Panama a couple of weeks earlier where a peso was $1.00. Got to PI, had missed my ship which made me illegal and subject to jail. The guy I was with father was a WO 4 in Subic Bay. We hi-tailed it from the docks to a hotel. I had $20.00 and paid the cab fare which was 18 pesos. The cabbie started to hand me back a bunch of pesos and I stopped him, taking two pesos back. The guy was all over me thanking me. It was only later that I found out that a peso in PI was $.25. Ended up hiding out in PI for 5 weeks. Man it's fantastic to survive being young and ignorant. Have an even more harrying story about Okinawa. Mike
