I have no idea what "Hogo" and "cedar" are talking about. It's like trying to understand a foreign language that I don't know. Actually more like space alien lingo. I started this thread to encourage a serious discussion of patriotism. This is not what I expected or want.

Patriotism is a swindle, and when the average man on the street is caught in it's net, it is a case of ignorance instead of patriotism! We even have a stinger rocket named (Patriotism ), sailing through the universe, never finding a target. Archimedes traveled the globe with a kerosine lamp looking for an honest man; he ran out of oil. It seems as though patriotism and kerosine was wasted time.

From the tens of thousands of posts that I have read over the past year, there are Patriot wannabes on all sides of every issue! However, the vast majority lack the intellectual incentives that are both the right and duty of a CITIZEN. It is (in my humble opinion) not possible to be a true Patriot without fulfilling at least a few of the obligations of citizenship.
Citizenship and Patriotism require a bit of open minded thinking of one’s own, and an honest exploration of one’s personal opinion on each individual topic of importance to the self. It then requires an honest and objective exploration of ALL opposing views in order to construct a truly informed conclusion.
Debate is an American tradition; an intrinsic must for the democratic blueprint this country was founded on; respectful disagreements, presentation of facts and examples to back up one’s ideology. Unfortunately, intelligent exchanges have been few and far between.
What I have found, everywhere I look, is a relentless repetition of cookie-cutter slogans, wide scale disrespect, rank rudeness and incessant psychobabble. It answers many questions regarding WHY this fair land of ours is in the state that it is in.
The polarization of the American people is appalling! THAT is NOT Patriotic, no matter how one looks at it. Patriots work together, even while thinking separately. Strength lies in that melding and the creative solutions to make it workable!
Until ‘the people’ resume thinking for themselves, as individuals, progress toward a brighter future is just not possible. Without a willingness to truly learn for one’s self the many facets of a social or political issue, understanding is unattainable.
‘The people’ must remember that their opinion truly matters – but it will matter to the point of being Patriotic when it is pondered honestly in the heart.
Blind obedience and subservience to a singular political party, politician, philosophy, teacher, idol, or the lame fragment of a solution is rampant! It’s disheartening to read the same unimaginative ‘knee jerk’ responses to proffered information on any of the ‘key’ issues. I have read duplicate, boring, robotic responses from literally hundreds of different blog/forum posters that could have been copy/pasted from the same source.
How did obscenities and name calling come to replace civilized exchanges of ideas? Where did creative, independent, investigative thought go? Where did genuine learning go? How did Patriotism end up in the outhouse?

This is exactly the point I've been trying to make (albeit worded better here, perhaps). I've been saying that we need to focus less on the special interests, and more on the common interests. Special interests set us apart. Common interests bind us together. Want a true fundamental t***sformation of the US? Then start focusing on our common problems.
