Upon going to the my topics list I used to be able to see at a glance which active ones at the top of the list have had new replies. Now I have to waste my time looking at each one individually.

I'll add an option to list only "my topics" on the Watched Topics page. Combined with "unread only" filter it would show you your topics which have new replies.

Using My Topics for this purpose isn't really effective.

I liked seeing the complete responses even though the longer ones may take a little more scrolling to get through.

That's subjective. And it could as easily be described as "takes a lot of scrolling to get through" and it would still be an accurate description of what was going on.

I might be able to add a custom view setting for this, to allow users to specify if they want to see complete quotes. But I'm not sure yet. I would need to check the implementation to see if it can be done without too much additional coding.

And why make it necessary to click 2 times in 2 different locations to get to our bookmark list?

My Profile/Custom View Settings. Add whatever links you need (like Bookmarks) to the top menu.

how about putting that same little marker (=>) on the articles bookmarked to return us to the last page we were on

I'll think about it. But I want to fix the initial bugs first, before adding new features.

On some threads it comes up tiny on an android phone. You have to 'finger' it to see it. Otherwise, it seems to work pretty well so far.

Can you PM me a screenshot of it happening?

BAM! That could be it!

Can you guys bold type the poster's name or make it more prominent in some other way?

I'll see about adding it as a custom view setting.

What spacing? I'm not sure what you mean.

Now that I think about it, there is no need to scroll. Just like with the old software, you can still use Ctrl+Enter to submit a post. No need to actually click on the Send button.

OK click reply, how large is the space for a reply? Mine is all the way across the page and I have to scroll down to reply, OK with a desk top and mouse that not be a big deal but with a laptop of tablet it's a very big deal.

Please PM me a screenshot of how it looks on your laptop or tablet.

It is also inconvenient for those of us who use the home page for the purpose of seeing who is currently active on the site.

Before, it was immediately accessible by simply clicking the " Home " option.

Now we are forced to scroll down through all of the " Most Active " texts to get to the current users list.

Click My Profile. Scroll down to Custom View Settings. Enable "Hide active discussions on the home page" option.
This is covered in the Help pages, link at the top , which I encourage everyone to read.

Before, the old format allowed the user to click on the very last comment posted on the topic.

There were two links -> and =>.

-> led to the last post in the topic.
=> led to the last post in the topic which you've read.

I removed -> since it makes no sense to keep both links. Stats show that 99% of the time when a user returns to a topic, he/she isn't really looking for the last post, but for the last post he/she read, to continue reading where previously left off.

So => is still there. Right next to the title.

The software that powers OPP is going to be upgraded in the next few days.

***

The major and the most obvious change will be the page layout.

I understand that people who've been using the forum for a while are used to the old layout, and switching to the new layout might feel somewhat disorienting at first. But trust me, during the development of the new software, it took me less than a week to completely get used to the new layout. It's just a matter of habit. So please hang in there.

Why change the layout?

Well, these days people use huge desktop screens and tiny smartphone screens and everything in between. The array of different devices people use today is greater than it has ever been. The old forum page layout simply doesn't work well enough with smartphones (and doesn't work well with really large desktop screens).

To make the forum compatible with as many desktops, laptops, tables, readers, smartphones as possible, we simplified the page layout and removed tabulated elements from pages. Every element on every page on the forum simply flows top to bottom.

Because of that, we'll no longer have the left margin with user information next to each post. Instead, user information is shown directly above. Or rather, the post's text follows the user information.

***

New Section

Once the software is upgraded, I'm planning on creating another section. It would be similar to Main, but would be an invite-only section.

Only users on the list will be able to post in that section.

Initially, all active users will be added to the list. Going forward, I'll clean up the section through the process of elimination.

The main rule of the new invite-only section would be about insults and foul language.

Users who routinely insult others will be kicked out of the section, either temporarily or permanently, depending on the severity.

Since it would be an invite-only section, we won't have to worry about anyone creating new forum accounts just to troll around. New users won't automatically be invited to the section.

Which means once someone is kicked out of this new section there is no way to get back in, unless that user is invited back.

It doesn't matter what your political affiliation is, as long as you are able to maintain a conversation in a civil manner you'll be allowed to continue posting in the new invite-only section.

Additionally, new users who have shown, by participating in Main, that they are capable of controlling themselves will be invited to participate in the new section as well.

There will also be an implicit system of referrals. Any user who is participating in the new section will be able to request other users to be invited. So if you are talking to some new user in Main and feel that this person would be a good fit for our invite-only section, then you'll be able to request this person to be added to the list.

I haven't decided on the name of the section yet, but most likely it will be something boring and descriptive like "Invite-Only Discussions", or something like that.

The original Main section will remain as it is, and it will still be the main section of the forum.

The purpose of the new invite-only section is to provide a platform for people who prefer discussing politics without resorting to insults and foul language.

The software transition announcement follows (taken from the announcement text of the new software; I'll run the announcement in full once the software is upgraded):

I tried to make transition to the new software as painless as possible. So the overall forum structure and function remains the same. All core control links are in their place. Some new features have been added, but most of the old features remain, and can be accessed through the same means as before.

Some of the new features.

Mobile Friendly

Page layout that works well with smartphones.

Attachments In Private Messages

You can attach files and pictures to private messages in the same way as you do with posts.

Editing Sent Private Messages

You can edit the text of a sent private message by clicking on it, and then clicking Quick Edit. You can't edit attachments, but you can edit the title and the text. This feature is meant mostly for fixing typos. You can edit a sent PM until it has been opened by the recipient. After that, the quick edit option disappears, since it doesn't make sense to edit a private message that was already read.

Ignore Lists

You can add users you don't like to you ignore list. You will then no longer see their topics. They will not be able to reply in your topics. And they will not be able to send you private messages.

Invite-Only Topics And Sections

To deal with trolls, we are going to try out invite-only topics (and maybe sections). Such topics would only allow posts from an established list of users. So that it wouldn't be possible for a troll to register new accounts just for the purpose of disrupting that particular topic. This is mostly planned for long-running topics with a limited number of established participating users.

Mass Unwatching Topics

On the Watched Topics page, there is a link to mass unwatch old topics.

Disabling Watched Topics Based On Replying

In My Profile settings, there is a way to prevent the forum from automatically adding topics in which you reply to your watched topics list. That way your watched topics list won't get filled with too many topics. If this option is enabled, then you would need to manually click Watch for topics which you do want to add to your watched topics list.

Long Quotes

Quotes that are longer than 500 characters will not be shown in full. This is done to avoid the need for excessive page scrolling just for a one-liner reply.
