Who said gravity moves sideways? Gravity has magnitude and direction, but it has no mass so it doesn't move anywhere.
Gravity is one of the four fundamental forces in the universe. Gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces, acting together, hold this entire shebang together. Every physical object (mass) in the universe exerts the force of gravity on every other object.
Newton's law of universal gravitation states that every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force directed along a line of centers of the two objects and is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers. Put simply the force of gravity between two objects is dependent on the masses of the two objects and the distance between them. Gravity is why the earth orbits the sun, and the moon orbits the earth. The moon's gravitational force causes the tides in the earth's oceans.
Now that we know gravity is a force of mutual attraction between all physical objects in the universe, we can move on to the forces that act on objects in motion, particularly the forces in play when two objects collide with each other, and in the case of the collapse of the twin towers, when a mass in motion collides with a mass at rest.
Without rehashing the details and calculations of Newton's laws of motion, understanding their applications to mass and momentum is critical to understanding why when a mass of say 62 million kgs of concrete, steel and office contents accelerating at 9.8m/s collides with a similar mass of 4 million kgs at rest, the resulting unbalanced forces--such as impact, tension, torque, spring, friction--can easily exceed the force of gravity and will not only cause disintegration or destruction but will also impart changes in direction, velocity, and momentum of the resulting debris.
This is why we see sections of perimeter wall, flooring, dust and other debris being ejected away from the the collapsing towers.
