Explain to readers why the same columns which had held up the upper floors for over half a century would suddenly not be able to support that load.

Leslie Robertson explained it quite clearly that the perimeter columns and the core columns did not bear the total load independent of each other, they shared the load equally. The floor truss systems tied the vertical support columns together and stabilized the entire system. When the collapsing mass destroyed the floor system connections to the vertical support, either along the perimeter or the core, or both, not only did the floor system join the falling mass and collapse DOWN due to gravity, but the support columns lost stability and fractured or buckled. The videos that show a 70 story section of the North Tower core columns standing for 3 or 4 seconds after the collapsing mass had fallen past them not only confirm that the floor system were destroyed but that the columns could not stand without them.
