This being from the internet, I cannot verify, but the following is supposedly a true story relating a situation that actually occurred in Los Angeles:

U.S. Marines were backing-up LAPD on a call that someone had broken into a store. At the scene, the cop told the Marines to "cover" him as he approached the store (to police, "cover" means to point your weapons in the direction of the threat, to Marines it means lay down a base of fire!). The Marines promptly laid down a base of fire. The Marines fired 178 rounds before they stopped shooting. The thief, probably a little scared at this point, called 911 and reported, "They're shooting at me!"
This being from the internet, I cannot verify, but... (show quote)

sounds about right
typical Jarheads
acting without thinking
A Swabbie would have realized he was in a civilian area
and would have thought before he acted

For you, BoatBob2 & BadBobby....

A Soldier and a Sailor boarded a quick shuttle flight out of Dallas, headed for Houston. One sat in the window seat, the other sat in the middle seat. Just before take-off, a U.S. Marine got on and took the aisle seat next to the two. The Jarhead kicked off his shoes, wiggled his toes and was settling in when the Soldier in the window seat said, "I think I'll get up and get a coke."

"No problem," said the Marine, "I'll get it for you." While he was gone, the Soldier picked up the Leatherneck's shoe and spit in it.

When the Gyrene returned with the coke, the Sailor in the middle seat said, "That looks good, I think I'll have one too." Again, the Marine again obligingly went to fetch it and while he was gone, the Sailor picked up the Marines's other shoe and spit in it. The Devil-Dog returned and they all sat back and enjoyed the rest of the short flight to Houston.

As the plane was landing, the Marine slipped his feet into his shoes and knew immediately what had happened. "How long must this go on?" the Marine asked. "This fighting between our services? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in shoes and pissing in cokes?"
For you, BoatBob2 & BadBobby.... br br A Sold... (show quote)

knew several Marines while in the Service Slat
none of them would have pissed in my coke bottle
nor would I have pissed in their shoes
I would however stood up for any one of them
it seemed that when the drinking on shore leave got rowdier that animosity did arise between the two parts of the Navy

Do not take my joke to suggest I would ever spit in your shoe or piss in your drink, BB. That would be a dastardly thing to do. Perish the thought.

Damn! Will one of you guys tell me what the noise was. I hate to admit that I am one of the 10% that didn't get the word.

Like it says, you must be a Marine to know the secret of the noise. If you say you are a Marine and you don't know the secret, there are only two possibilities; either you were off that day or your Drill Sergeant didn't trust you to keep the secret. There is no 'third way'. So, firstly, are you a Marine?

I was at S.D. for Boot Camp, Pendelton, with Chesty Puller's 3'd Brigade and 2n'd Bat., 1st, 1st in Korea, I was there for Berlin Gate which saved the last outpost of 13 that the Army gave back to the Gooks, (the Army had their track shoes on) and at Cherry Point at my discharge.

Sorry to hear of your bad experiences with the Marine officer at Dong Ha. I heard stories of overly gung-ho officers who had put men's lives needlessly in jeopardy. I went through Dong Ha, along with many other base camps in I Corps during 1968/69. My first duty post in 'Nam was Cua Viet, east of Dong Ha on the coast. My unit was in the process of leaving Khe Sanh, and moved around quite a bit until we settled in on Marble Mountain, north of DaNang, near the end of my tour. As I said, most Marine officers I met/knew were decent, as were most of the staff NCOs. Luck of the draw, I guess. Kind'a late, but...welcome home, Brother.
