6 Prescription Drugs That Aren't as Safe as the Government Claims
Adding to the problem is the fact that the nominee to head the FDA is steeped in Big Pharma money.

What stands between Big Pharma's desire for blockbuster drug sales and drug safety?

In addition to the FDA, it is often medical journal editors who see, evaluate and publish early research. In fact, the benefits of drugs in the "pipeline" that have not been approved yet are sometimes floated in medical journals to "preposition" the marketing and brand the drug candidate.

For example, five years before the recent approval of the drug flibanserin for low female sex drive, the British journal Women's Health published research titled "Flibanserin: a potential treatment for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder in premenopausal women."

Just trying to get a jump on things.

A quick look at drugs or drug uses that later turned out to be risky shows a disturbing trail of “bought” science in major medical journals—"support" from the drug company that is actually making the drug is not disclosed.

Paracetamol anti-inflammatory pain drug's: (also known as acetaminophen) Cause liver poisoning overdoses.

NSAIDs Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain drug's, COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes: Vioxx, Bextra and Celebrex, Imitrex. Linked to heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths

Awareness of bought science crystalized after Vioxx, a pain drug advertised by Dorothy Hamill, the former Bruce Jenner and other celebrities was eventually linked to more than 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths.

The drug was pulled from the market in 2004.

Much of Vioxx's perceived safety stemmed from an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2001 that downplayed its actual heart risks.

When the enormity of the dupe became apparent, Jeffrey Drazen, then NEJM editor, said the authors of the article, who included Merck employees, had deliberately buried data.

Why would paid employees of a for-profit drug company do that?

"This was an episode where it was clear people had taken data and not reported it fully," said Drazen. "I have now learned we need to be much more careful.”

SSRI Antidepressants Paxil and Lexapro:

Soon after the Vioxx revelation, the Journal of the American Medical Association began to have its own scandals.

Doctor authors who had defended the use of antidepressants during pregnancy in a 2006 JAMA article had ties to antidepressant manufacturers.

Oops.

Lee Cohen, lead author of the antidepressants study, declared in a followup letter to JAMA that, "We did not view those associations as relevant to this study," and listed 76 other financial relationships the nine physician authors had with Pharma.

Three years later another JAMA author was found to have undisclosed financial links to SSRI makers. Robert Robinson, who wrote about the drug Lexapro, had failed to report lecture fees he received from its manufacturer.

The SSRI Paxil also benefitted from Pharma money.

Martin Keller, former professor emeritus of psychiatry at Brown and lead author of a now discredited Paxil study, admitted that GSK had given him tens of thousands of dollars during and after the study.

Statins FAT/Cholesterol HDL lowering drugs: Lipitor and Crestor

AlterNet recently covered how Big Pharma got statins—especially Lipitor and Crestor—into millions of US medicine chests.

During the same year JAMA had undisclosed funding from antidepressant makers, Harvard’s Paul Ridker (whose research put the statin Crestor on the map) also apologized to JAMA for omitted financial disclosures.

For his article about cardiovascular clinical trials, he thought he only had to report funding for the "study at hand" and did not mention funding from AstraZeneca, Bayer, Novartis, Roche, Sanofi-Aventis and five other pharmaceutical companies.

Immune Suppressing Drugs: ]infliximab (Remicade, Enbrel) and adalimumab (Humira) for rheumatoid arthritis.

Weeks after Ridker's disclosure, another apology letter appeared in JAMA referring to a paper that had been published the previous year looking at cancer risks in patients taking infliximab (Remicade, Enbrel) and adalimumab (Humira) for rheumatoid arthritis.

Author Eric L. Matteson, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and other Mayo researchers didn't tell the journal they had received $25,000 from Enbrel-maker Amgen.

("The stipend was not linked to the study or systematic review of TNF-alpha antibodies") Nor did the researchers tell JAMA they had let Abbott Laboratories, then the maker of Humira (now made by AbbVie), review the paper before it was published.

AlterNet has covered the dangers of immune suppressing drugs like Humira, prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions, for years. The drugs can be beneficial for people with serious conditions, but for people with mild conditions the risks, which include cancer, are hard to justify.

In fact, some are speculating the pneumonia and intestinal conditions that took the life of the Eagle’s Glenn Frey in January were exacerbated by the RA drugs he took which invite opportunistic infections.

Various Anti-Stroke Drugs

There were more missed disclosures at JAMA. The same year as Ridker's mea culpa, doctor authors who said patients with migraines that included auras were at risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke also disclosed financial links to cardiovascular medication manufacturers.

"While we believe that we have no financial interests, relationships, or affiliations that would be relevant to our describing a biological link between migraine and cardiovascular disease," wrote Tobias Kurth, lead author in a followup letter to JAMA, "we are disclosing all nonfederal relationships of every coauthor."

Kurth goes on to list 53 financial relationships the six physician authors had with drug companies.

Five years later in the American Heart Association's magazine Circulation, Kurth was among authors who were still making the stroke risk claim, this time with Pharma disclosures.

Risperdal and Other Pediatric Antipsychotics

Is the last few years, Pharma has led the "science" that proclaims children can and do suffer from depression and psychosis (in addition to their widespread attention deficit problems).

Leading the claim is Joan Luby, who was forced to write in the Archives of General Psychiatry that she had not disclosed lectures she gave for AstraZeneca and other industry ties when writing about the problem of childhood depression "because they were not relevant to the subject of the article."

If anyone doubts there is money in psychiatric pediatric drug sales consider this: an entire “Pediatric Mood Disorders” program was founded at the University of Illinois Chicago by a Pharma-funded doctor to “intervene” in such childhood problems.

Courts Increasingly Defend Pharma Marketing "Speech"

You might think courts would side with the public against Big Pharma's desire to hide risks and increase benefits to sell drugs. But the opposite is occurring.

Last year US District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer ruled that the First Amendment covers Big Pharma messages including when the industry floats uses for its drugs that have not been approved by the FDA, called "off-label marketing."

The FDA cannot block such speech, said the court. The ruling pertained to the triglyceride-blocking drug Amarin, only applies to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals (which includes New York, Connecticut and Vermont) and is likely to be appealed.

But in 2011, the Supreme Court struck down a Vermont statute that blocked Pharma from mining doctor prescribing information to better sell drugs, also calling it speech. Six Supreme Court Justices said the law limited Pharma's free speech—previously known as "marketing."

Does Disclosure Even Matter?

The medical journals' "disclosure-gates" reveal that doctors have more Pharma financial links than anyone thought, and that some doctors think they have the ability and the right to decide which ones are “relevant.”

Remember when politicians and officials would step down over merely the appearance of conflicts of interest or wrongdoing?

And there is another irony. The medical community and public may not even care.

Since medical disclosure rules were rolled out more than five years ago, I have been to medical conferences where presenters post disclosure slide after disclosure slide which clearly shape their pro-drug presentations, yet doctors in the audience do not seem to blink an eye.

Is it a case of, "Hey Mom, all the kids are doing it"?

More disturbing is the fact that the current FDA Commissioner nominee, Duke researcher Robert Califf, is so steeped in Pharma money, some have said it amounts to a handover of the drug safety organization to the drug industry.

A disclosure statement on the website of the Duke Clinical Research Institute where Califf directed research lists 25 drug companies Califf receives funding from, including drug giants Johnson & Johnson, Lilly, Merck, Schering Plough and GSK. Duke itself was steeped in scandal after a major research fraud that resulted in terminated grants, retracted papers and a 60 Minutes special.

Califf was instrumental in the Duke drug trial of the blood thinner Xarelto, and was an early cheerleader despite medical experts’ objections to its approval and 379 subsequent deaths.

Califf defended Pharma financial ties on National Public Radio, saying, “Many of us consult with the pharmaceutical industry, which I think is a very good thing.

They need ideas and then the decision about what they do is really up to the person who is funding the study.”

Senator Bernie Sanders says he opposes the confirmation of Califf.

"Instead of listening to the demands of the pharmaceutical industry and their 1,400 lobbyists, it is about time that the FDA and Congress started listening to the overwhelming majority of the American people, who believe that medicine is too expensive," he said in a news release.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska blocked the January v**e for Califf’s confirmation, ironically not because of the FDA’s drug duties but because of its food responsibilities.

According to the New York Times, the senator said she would block Califf’s candidacy because of the FDA’s 2015 approval of a genetically engineered salmon that threatens her state’s salmon industry. (AlterNet looked at the new GE salmon in December.)

Still, few doubt the Pharma-friendly Califf will be the next FDA Commissioner, and some say if that is the case, why even have an FDA?

By Naomi Jagoda
Democratic p**********l candidate Hillary Clinton on Monday called for an additional 4 percent tax on people making more than $5 million per year.
Clinton called the tax a “fair share surcharge” that would make sure wealthier taxpayers pay higher tax rates.
“This surcharge is a direct way to ensure that effective rates rise for taxpayers who are avoiding paying their fair share, and that the richest Americans pay an effective rate higher than middle-class families,” a Clinton campaign aide said.
The surcharge, which Clinton unveiled at an organizing event in Iowa Monday afternoon, would raise more than $150 billion over 10 years, the aide said, and is part of Clinton's plan to build on the principle of the "Buffett Rule" to raise the effective tax rates of the rich.
The Buffett Rule, named after philanthropist billionaire Warren Buffett, would ensure that those making more than $1 million pay at least 30 percent of their incomes in taxes.

The big fall-off-your-chair moment during President Obama's State of the Union address came when he proclaimed: "We've cut our imports of foreign oil by nearly 60 percent and cut carbon pollution more than any other country on Earth. Gas under two bucks a gallon ain't bad, either."

Sure, Mr. President. Take a bow for the smashing success of the very domestic oil and gas industry that you have tried to destroy.

Even Obama couldn't carry this off. The smirk on his face as he sang the praises of the oil and gas industry was unmistakable.

Right after Obama boasted of these low gas prices, he reverted back to form, by sermonizing:

"We've got to accelerate the t***sition away from dirty energy" -- by which he means f****l f**ls. Then the hammer came down: "I'm going to push to change the way we manage our oil and coal resources, so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet."

So, 30 seconds after toasting lower gas prices, he pledges to find ways to make gas more expensive.

The irony of the Obama war against f****l f**ls is that the shale oil and gas revolution in America has saved Obama. During his first term, all the net new jobs created in America came from oil and gas as fracking took off in Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Obama owed his re-e******n to the frackers, but instead he and his Environmental Protection Agency have tried to shut them down.

The EPA has issued three regulations in the last year -- the clean power plant rule, the methane rule and tougher clean air statutes -- that have begun to shut down f****l f**l production in America, as planned.

How bad are these rules? According to Harold Hamm of Continental Resources, a major driller in North Dakota: "These rules and red tape are k*****g us. They are raising our costs at a time when oil prices are low, and margins are already thin. This means layoffs of workers." Obama seems to be doing exactly what the Saudi oil sheiks are trying to do: shutting down fracking in America.

Obama won't allow drilling on federal lands. He wants to raise taxes on oil and gas production. He won't give the go-ahead to the Keystone XL pipeline, or any pipelines for that matter, and he just handed out hundreds of millions of dollars to keep the solar and wind industries from bankruptcy. Other than that, he's pro-oil and pro-gas.

He also neglected to mention that the major reason that U.S. carbon emissions are falling is that cheap and clean-burning natural gas, due to shale drilling, is becoming the No. 1 source of electricity production in America. The lesson: Free markets and innovation are almost always the best way to clean the environment.

If Obama's vision of an American energy future is fulfilled, the price of oil and gas will skyrocket -- again. He'd like that to happen. This is the only possible scenario that makes g***n e****y financially feasible.

One last point about low gas prices. How come when oil prices rise, the entire industry is accused of price fixing to gouge consumers? But if the industry has the monopolistic powers to keep prices as high as possible, why aren't they doing that now? The answer is in the new era of shale oil and gas this a brutally price-competitive industry -- unlike in the past, where the OPEC monopoly was able to fix prices. OPEC can't manipulate prices now, because the U.S. will soon be the world's largest producer. All the more reason to let the domestic oil and gas industry flourish.

For now, Obama, unbelievably, will hog the credit for lower gas prices that he never wanted in the first place, while he finds every way possible to make gas more expensive in the years to come. No wonder v**ers have grown so cynical of the political class.

Republican lawmakers have accused the Obama administration of putting Iran’s interests ahead of the U.S. in a scathing letter to Secretary of State John Kerry. The letter, signed by 13 senators including Mark Kirk, Tom Cotton, and Kelly Ayotte, was inspired by the administration’s efforts to block congressional legislation that would have tightened the government’s visa waiver program.

“Iran-sponsored terrorists and militants are responsible for the death of more than 700 Americans,” the senators wrote. “As you continue to engage with [Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif], we urge—rather than seeking to placate the complaints of Iran, the world’s biggest state sponsor of terrorism—you to press him and his government to cease its support for terrorism and provide tangible evidence that it is doing so.”

At the end of 2015, urged on by the serious security concerns exposed by San Bernardino terrorist Tashfeen Malik, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee set about developing new visa restrictions. Under the new law, foreigners would be prohibited from entering the United States if they had traveled to Iraq, Iran, or any other country designated a sponsor of terrorism since 2011.

Rather than support the effort, Kerry sent a letter to Tehran leaders in December, assuring them that President Obama would veto the new restrictions. Iran had publicly criticized the legislation, saying that it would be a violation of the nuclear deal.

The senators noted in their correspondence that the reforms “were not drafted with Iranian interests in mind, but U.S. national security interests.”

The latest division comes at a time when Republicans and Democrats battle publicly over the dramatic capture of 10 U.S. Navy sailors in Iran. Obama is claiming that the quickly-defused situation is proof of why diplomacy works better than hostility. Republicans were aghast at the pictures of sailors on their knees before the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, claiming that if this episode was proof of anything, it showed that America’s enemies were no longer afraid of the U.S.

“The administration is pretending as if nothing out of the ordinary has occurred,” said Sen. John McCain in a statement. “Vice President Joe Biden described the incident as ‘standard nautical practice.’ That assertion is patently false.”

Both of these incidents prove that the Obama administration is willing to go to the ends of the Earth to keep Iran happy and satisfied. An outsider would look at this and come to the conclusion that in a direct war between Iran and the United States, Iran would easily achieve victory. That’s obviously not the case, of course, but when you have a president whose top priority is his legacy and not the safety of the American people, things get a little wonky.

Greg Brady: We are sick and tired of the Republican debates and Trump, Cruz, Rubio, etc. attacking each other to be elect in November 2016, without a real plan to repair the economic catastrophe we have since 2001, under President George W. Bush a compassionate Republican.

Cool Breeze: Stupidities in "One Political Plaza" are like t***smitted diseases, don't use the name of GOD for your own convenience, the 2sd. Amendment is obsolete now in 2016, buying military weapons to k**l innocent people in movies, schools, and shopping centers by crazy people is criminal and the majority in U.S. Congress are legally, and morally responsibly for the lousy GUN control we have in U.S.A.

Tgard79: D. Trump and T. Cruz finally taking off the gloves, and they both believed they won the war, but the losers are "We The People" with their crazy ideas and no economic plans to repair U.S. economy catastrophe, the unemployment, the stagnant salaries, and everything made in CHINA.
