Ta-Nehisi Coates became a liberal hero after writing a long boring piece for The Atlantic about how the US owes black people trillions in s***ery r********ns. Heâs back with another long boring piece for the liberal magazine about how r****t America has been to Obama during his time in office. As part of this snore-fest, Obama makes the stunning claim that his terrible presidency only seems terrible because of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin.
As a companion to Coatesâ âMy President Was Blackâ article, The Atlantic released the source interviews with Barack Obama. Itâs really some of the least interesting stuff Iâve ever read, but deep down inside, there was one little nugget. Obama believes, or wants you to believe, that the public perception that heâs been a weak president is not true and only based on conservative media coverage.
âIn 2008 I was never subjected to the kind of concentrated vilification of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, the whole conservative-media ecosystem, and so as a consequence, even for my first two years as a senator I was polling at 70 percent. And it was because people basically saw me unfiltered. I was at a town-hall meeting, or I was talking to people directly, or they had met me, or I would speak at a university or go to a VFW hall. But they werenât seeing some image of me as trying to take away their stuff and give it to black people, and coddle criminals, and all the stereotypes of not just African American politicians but liberal politicians. You started to see that kind of prism being established towards the end of the 2008 race, particularly once Sarah Palin was the nominee. And obviously almost immediately after I was elected, it was deployed in full force. And it had an impact in terms of how a large portion of white v**ers would see me,â said Obama.
As you can see the failure of ObamaCare, the weak foreign policy decisions, the partisanship, and d******eness are just an illusion created by that miniscule slice of the media that leans to the right. When you saw Obama golfing as the country and the world were burning, it just wasnât true; Rush Limbaugh made it up. When Obama focused on unimportant social issues instead of the economy, it was an invention of Fox News. When Obama was waging a cultural war against most of America, it was really Sarah Palin who was dividing the nation.
What a complete load of s**t. No president in US history has received less scrutiny from the press than Obama. Most news outlets and the entire entertainment industry have been firmly in Obamaâs corner from day one. Any time someone dared question him, a quick accusation of r****m shot down that criticism. Obama carefully controlled his public persona and media coverage of his presidency. Kim Jong Il doesnât get as favorable press from the North Korean media as Obama gets from the American media.
The most ridiculous thing about this pathetic complaint is, all of the stuff that people h**e about Obama, heâs actually proud of. Seriously, the socialism, the directionless policies, and the identity politics are what he considers his legacy. If heâs going to toot his own horn of his terrible presidency, he should be thanking Fox, Rush, and Sarah for calling attention to it.

I really have enjoyed both of Ta-Nehisi Coates' books. Didn't read the Atlantic article but heard him speak on PBS Newshour.
