Papa Gringo was attending his high school reunion
The subject came up as to what they did on Christmas Eve,when they were children
Patrick Oriley replied"My twelvve brothers and I would go to midnight Mass and sing hymns,then go back home and put mince pies on the back porch for Father Christmas
hang up our stockings and go to bed,waiting for Father Christmas to come
Jimmy Brown then said"My Sister and I would go to church with Mom and Dad and sing Christmas carols.then when we got home we would put cookies and milk by the fire place for Santa.
then we would go to bed and wait for Christmas day
Then everyone realized that there was a Jewish graduate standing there.and not wanting to just leave him out of the conversation one of them asked"Papa,what did you do on Christmas Eve?"
Papa Gringo laughed and said"It was the same thing every Christmas Eve.Dad would come home from the office and we would all pile into the Rolls Royce and go down to Dads Toy factory.
we would go inside and look at all the empty shelves,sing "Oh ,what a friend we have in Jesus.then we would all go to the Bahamas for a week"

Ha ha. My father had us leave out a glass or red wine and a piece of cake or rye bread. Remembrance of Christmas past. While awaiting my daughter's visit. And there is NO tinsel to be found. Is this a new thing? Anyone who has any old tinsel, please send it to me in Oakland. We also called Santa St. Nick. Is this just me showing my age? And I remember with horror the idea that I might get coal in my stocking. We got oranges, walnuts, almonds, small things. At one point our presents were hung on a rope across the very small living room. The stockings were the treat. I love this post. Happy Channukah, merry Christmas.

BTW, Chanukah begins at sundown on Christmas Eve this year and runs for eight days. I will be getting my Chanukah Bush very soon. Maggie, my cat, loves to climb trees. It will be her gift.
