I think it is important to be able to contradictory thoughts in ones brain. Especially after deciding which side one is on.

I always knew you were a lady.

Papa was a very critical thinker and he tried his best to teach me. I used to think that he was stalling when he said he needed to "read up" on something rather than giving a quick opinion. But, I have learned that the older I get the more I appreciate his teachings.

So, thank you very much! My Papa is still my hero.

I find that what many consider a contradiction are not necessarily so. We as a Nation may not agree on how to obtain a result; we are truly looking for the best outcome for our nation regardless of political affiliation. We simply do not agree on how to get the results we need.

Everyplace we buy products is adding this tax. So, let us say that you spend $6000 a year on eating out, entertainment, or vacationing you will have given the government $138 each year, multiply that by approximately 300,000,000. Income from this tax will be about 5,306,700,000,000 dollars a year. Pretty crafty way of fleecing the Citizens of the US! And should you think that the poor is exempt, no if they buy any product they too will be paying.

Love is such a wonderful motivator! When I was on an unaccompanied tour, my husband and sons lived in Greece. Ano Voula, to be specific. I spent my weekends with them and of course being unaccompanied, I had the extra leave time (morale leave). I loved the country and the people. My husband and sons became proficient in Greek.

You got the majority of the message! So you did quite well!

It took me a while to try and read what you wrote. I don't think I got it all, but I got the gist of it. I can no longer read well, nor write even less in Greek. It has been a very long time for me. I was never fluent, but I did learn enough in Greek school to be understood by the Greeks. My wife was Greek, and I had to learn it, attending Greek school, before she would marry me. Of course having a live in dictionary helped. So you can see how much I cared for her.

kukla means doll. That is what I always called my youngest.

I have been called many names, by 'professional' name callers, so it no longer bothers, nor affects, me. I just consider the source and proceed on my way.

I apologized for several who exhibited less than civil manners, not necessarily opinions. But, the verbiage and obnoxious terms.

Most certainly we need an array of commentators. I am not particularly found of hearing my own voice as though living in an echo chamber. I find that some Liberals can provide input that I have not considered. As my Papa always said, each point of view has an opposite point of view; neither can be discarded without diligently considering the possibilities that you may indeed be uninformed, misinformed, or myopic in view.

We did not rip into his thoughts. If you look at the comments, we are simply amazed that he claimed to be an objective observer. He (or she) had a neutral definition, but clearly did not use it. He's a conservative, eh? And you are welcoming him. Good.

But you need us liberals here because without us all you guys would be doing is shaking each others hands and exchanging hugs.

And what makes you think that they are not already doing this? http://www.hoover.org/publications/hoover-digest/article/6325 This is an interesting observation on the older methods of teaching and what we are rubber stamping as education/intelligence. I'm waiting for one of those gurus to come up with the idea of "give away" high school diplomas. Everybody knows that lack of a high school education causes increased poverty, crime and other unpleasant things. So, sooner or later, some doofus is going to insist that these problems will be solved by ensuring a diploma - no matter what you do, or don't do. You wouldn't even have to show up for classes, just come by, pick up your diploma, and all your problems will be solved.

These boneheads have such a disconnect from real life. They cannot understand what a disservice they are doing to these kids and as a result, the entire country. Being highly educated is not the same as being highly intelligent, but you'll never get the highly educated to see that.

First, thank you for putting me in the same list as those who are very accomplished; I am honored, humbled, and unworthy.

Having said that, I bet after you read all the comments up to this point, you are regretting your decision to post. The full cadre of the most outspoken Liberals have ripped into your thoughts. I apologize for them. I hope that you will continue to post and make your observations. I think that you can add a sense of balance to this otherwise confusion of opinions.

I have been a lurker, here, for a while. I have watched quite a few of the discussions develop over a period of a few weeks. I find one can learn a great deal from quietly watching. I thought I would register and leave a few observations. But first we need to define what an internet troll is.

I like Wikipedia's definition. In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

That is a good definition, but it does nothing to explain the purpose. The purpose of the troll is to stifle dissenting opinion. They want to stop any conversation where ideas which differ from theirs are expressed. The reason is to dominate the political arena by shutting up and out any differing opinion.

I do not know who manages this site, but my guess would be it is one of the left wing ideologues who try to dominate and ultimately shut down debate that disagrees with them. There seem to be quite a few folks (Tasine, Ginny, Old Gringo, oldroy and others) who attempt serious, fact based discussion. These people will present factual information with serious supporting links.

Which brings us to the trolls. I regularly see the likes of Kevyn, Brian Devon, Armegeddun, Hungry Freaks, Raylan Wolfe, retired669 and a couple of others try to shut down discussion with profane, off topic rants. Or they support their positions with a far left opinion site, such as addictinginfo or mediamatters and no real fact. They then call the opponent all sorts of vile, profane names.

Which returns to my point, that this site seems more oriented to shutting down comment from right wingers, than supporting an honest exchange of ideas. The question in my mind is, was OPP developed as a trolling site, to stifle Conservative speech, or did it devolve to that?

Yeah, and who ever heard of the essay being optional? But then, if you can't read, you're not likely to be able to write either. Now days, even in elementary school, if you can read, write and do arithmetic, they want to put you in an advanced class. We scratch our heads as to why our kids are so much further behind than other nations kids and then do crap like this. I think our "experts" need to spend some time in the classroom teaching and less time patting each other on the back for being so "smart".
Yeah, and who ever heard of the essay being option... (show quote)

So very true. Heck, you don't need to be able to read and write, just be able to tie your shoes and the qualifications are met. My grandson is in "advanced" classes, but to be sure; and do not take this the wrong way because I am proud of him, he is doing average work.....nothing exceptional. When we finish lowering the bar to ground level, then what? Will they conclude that kids are eligible for Mensa because they can walk and chew gum at the same time?

Being open to discussion is how we come to a better understanding; and, yes, I feel that it is superior to being deaf, dumb, and blind to anything but party line or our deepest held prejudices. I express my opinion not as the end all or be all on the topic but only what I view as good and essential, willing, as I have repeatedly shown, open to seeing things in a different light.

Your opening remark struck me and held my interest. "Both sides do this, and most often it is unnecessary...except to stir up the specific constituency to rabid drool slobbering comments. The reasonable and well-informed find these threads tiresome and ugly." Then you went on to say that a well informed individual takes a "wait and see" approach. From many, or most of your previous posts, I found that you were eager to jump directly into the pool without first checking the water. By implication, you would have me believe that you think highly of yourself and your impeccable ability to remain natural, yet you are quick to jump into the fray and create the atmosphere that you condemn in your opening statement. I just found it amusing. I may be deaf, dumb, and blind--as you imply, but I do have a solid basis for my biased views.

Now for your statement about being willing to see other positions with more clarity than I. Perhaps. But, even the most open minded person has a niche that they protect. And I do agree, you staunchly protect yours with every means at your disposal.

How is it deflection? Jews are somehow immuned? I am a Judaphile since the age of fourteen, though this should have happened five years earlier. Jews are humans, yes? Ben, my next door neighbor and camp survivor, advised me about exceptionalism: no one is immuned from being human or being cruel. Or being wondrous and bringing great light.

She deflected a response, or to simplify she refocused the conversation to an issue that would be off subject or question at hand. I asked her a question, she chose not to respond to the question but to challenge my religious beliefs.

Wherein I made a statement that in my life, and the reason I can be happy 99.9 percent of the time is my priorities. First and foremost is my religion and God, second is my family, and then business. Just a very brief statement that is almost obscured in my comment. She highlighted this statement rather than responding to the larger question I proposed. It had nothing to do with "exceptionalism" or being "immuned" from anything.

I always tell people that it is helpful to get the entire history before one rushes into making critical statements. Often when people only read a two or three word response they may be missing a key ingredient in the conversation. In your case, had you read the exchanges then you would have better understood my comment regarding deflection.

Do have a wonderful day.

What is a Judaphile, a follower of Judas? I'm serious, I don't know. It isn't in my dictionary.

It is a made up word. It must be broken down to basics.

Juda, the tribal territory of his descendants which became the nucleus of David's kingdom and, after the kingdom had been divided into Israel and Judah, the southern kingdom of Judah, with Jerusalem as its center. Better known as those Hebrews in S Palestine
Phile, Greek philos which means to love

So, if you link them together you get a person that has great love for S Palestine Hebrews.

Hope this helps.

I heard about this travesty this morning. Clearly our education system is failing. Maybe it's time for something radical, like, oh I don't know... putting a teacher in charge of educational policies?

One does not reach excellence by lowering the bar.

At the rate and direction the system is going... I may just decide that the best person to take charge of my (future) kids' education, is me. Heck, I may even start liking the voucher idea.
