This sure looks like another argument for charter schools. Why aren't Black Students achieving at White Kids level. This sounds like racism to me.

I figured. Your question about black kids performing at white kids level was a give away. And then, saying it sounds like racism certainly suggests ignorance in that regard.

Boy did you ever smack me down, so subtly.
You sound like a former public school teacher. If I was not a teacher, how dare I criticize a school district for just eliminating the 8th grade algebra requirement, rather than fix the problem. That school district is not up to educating Black Students from when they start until they enter 8th grade. Perhaps they wouldn't mind giving up those black kids to charter schools. At least if the charter schools fail, the taxpayers can yank their funding. When the Frack did a public shool or it's teachers ever get punished for failure ?

I don't know. Maybe Black Parents might just want their kids to learn algebra. One or two Black Parents, perhaps. As far as Black Neighborhoods, I am not as ignorant as you imagine. I lived in a city in the early 1960s. I went to school with Black kids. Got beat up by Black Kids, but as you pointed out I never taught them so what the frack would I know about Black Kids and why apparently public schools find it impossible to teach them algebra.

I also was quite good at 8th grade algebra.

Pissed? Good.

It's much more complicated than you could imagine.

Go fix it. Or, STFU.

I'm here all week. Why not tell me how complicated you think it is ? One thing I can tell you is the answer is not to stop teaching algebra because it makes the school system look bad at having so many minority kids failing.

Stop hiding the problem. Tackle it head on. If minority kids fail, then they fail. If the problem is apparent, then solutions are possible. To me this is akin to one of sins the public schools did back in my day. Passing kids along who had not learned. Each grade wanted these special children moved on so they weren't their problem anymore.

A lot of these kids were not stupid, they just had learning disabilities such as dyslexia. I knew kids who graduated High School and could not read and write. Should I say, they were 'White Kids'. One of them learned to read after High School and ended up in a well paying technical job, but the public schools failed him miserably.

I remember the title. I never saw it. Now please explain what a movie has to do with Black kids and Algebra ?

Watch it and you'll probably understand a tiny bit of the problem. Otherwise it's a topic I am tired of rehashing. Bottom line, it ain't the teachers fault, it ain't the schools fault and it ain't about racism. It is also probably not a solvable problem, either. I could see that in 1978 and everything has compounded by factors of ten since then.

They need to be good at math. How else are they gonna keep track of their money from drug sales so they can pay income tax on it.

We are speaking about a particular field of math. I'm not sure that algebra applies to the drug trade. Wait wait. If Hunter wants to buy 4 vials of crack at $ 50 per vial and 10 bags of Pot at $ 20 per bag, how much money would the Big Guy need to give him to have a good party ? a = $ 50. 4a = x. b = $ 20. 10b = y. x + y = z. z is what the Big Guy owes Hunter. What is z ? You know what ? Algebra does apply. I bet the math wizards of OPP can solve this one.

Bulworth is a fictional story. It didn't really happen. Why would I get anything of value about why California Public Schools can't teach algebra to minorities from a movie about a Liberal Politician having a meltdown ? I read the plot on line.

Since you are too tired to continue, have a good evening.

Then z is what he'll pay taxes on, I'm sure. LOL

Went to DOD schools did well in algebra It is the level of teaching and the continuing plantation mentality by school boards and political leadership in these districts!
