A federal appeals court ruled late Tuesday that presidential electors who cast the actual ballots for president and vice president are free to vote as they wish and cannot be required to follow the results of the popular vote in their states.

The decision could give a single elector the power to decide the outcome of a presidential election — if the popular vote results in an apparent Electoral College tie.

"This issue could be a ticking time bomb in our divided politics. It's not hard to imagine how a single faithless elector, voting differently than his or her state did, could swing a close presidential election," said Mark Murray, NBC News senior political editor.

That was the purpose of the electoral college, to act as a foil to bad choices. But you apparently believe that a state's electoral should all go to the popular vote and disregard the population that didn't vote for them? Let the electoral be split according to popular vote, the GOP is dead because they are controlling states with minority GOP voters. Democracy is about majority rule, not minority.

Dems are about Majority Cruel and it's a good thing your idiot party is dying the death of ten thousand self inflicted cuts because the alternative would be worse! It's a gory pleasure to watch.

When Democrats are free of the Klinton Kurse they may eventually recover.

They changed nothing!!!!!!!!, have you read the Constitution (Amendment 12)? In history, "faithless electors" have voted 152 times against the popular state vote choice. Yes, it has changed the outcome of elections; in 1872, 63 Democratic Party electors decided they could not vote for Horace Greeley, who had died shortly after the election but before the Electoral College count. The second-highest number of faithless electors in one election happened in 1832, and it was against a vice-presidential candidate, Martin Van Buren. In 2016, there were a number of faithless electors; David Bright (ME - Bernie Sanders), Muhammad Abdurrahman (MN - Bernie Sanders), Michael Baca (CO - John Kasich), Esther John (WA - Colin Powell), Levi Guerra (WA - Colin Powell), Bret Chiafalo (WA - Colin Powell), Robert Satiacum (WA - Faith Spotted Eagle), and David Mulinix (HI - Bernie Sanders), voted for Trump. The two Republican electors were Chris Suprun (TX - John Kasich) and Bill Greene (TX - Ron Paul) voted for killary.

SCOTUS will put this to bed. But it is amazing that this kind of drivel actually reaches the SCOTUS today...

We are a Republic, Pete. Always have been...always will be.

Republic: A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

No state is required to vote in any matter whatsoever. I read that piece. It's ridiculous. No state is even required to have an election.
