Mike Huckabee says poor people convicted of nonviolent crimes should be sold into slavery, because the Bible.
The former Arkansas Governor and Republican presidential candidate endorsed biblical slavery over the modern prison system on Wednesdays edition of Mickelson in the Morning, a leading conservative Iowa radio program.
ThinkProgress reports.
Host Jan Mickelson began by bemoaning that the criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives. In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus.
It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold, Mickelson explained.
If they dont have anything, were supposed to take them down and sell them.
Mickelson went on to argue why jails, which he claimed are a pagan invention, are inferior to slavery: We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, theyre supposed to be working off the debt.
Wouldnt that be a better choice? the host asked.
Well, it really would be
Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.
Thats right, Huckabee says Biblical slavery is preferable to the contemporary criminal justice system. ThinkProgress notes:
Huckabees comments
appear to be the first time in modern history that a credible presidential candidate has joined the fringe call to reinstate slavery.
It is no secret that Huckabee is a Christian extremist.
In the recent past Huckabee promised that if elected president he would fight the secular theocracy that is supposedly destroying Christian liberty in America;
a. Made the false claim that pastors would face civil and criminal penalties if they refused to perform same-sex marriage;
b. And said if elected president he would ignore the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality because the Supreme Court is not the Supreme Being.
Mike Huckabee says that prison reform should be centered around slavery

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee stopped by the conservative talk radio program Mickelson in the Morning when the host, Jan Mickelson started to complained that the criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives.
According to Think Progress, Mickelson put forth a plan to the former governor, suggesting that biblical slavery could be the answer.
In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus.
It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold, Mickelson explained. If they dont have anything, were supposed to take them down and sell them.
Mickelson went on to argue why jails, which he claimed are a pagan invention, are inferior to slavery:
a. We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, theyre supposed to be working off the debt.
Wouldnt that be a better choice? the host asked.
And when Mike Huckabee, a man campaigning to run the United States and uphold the Constitution was asked if selling poor criminals into slavery was a better choice, he said:
b. Well, it really would be
Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.
Thats right, Huckabee said yes.
Think Progress noted that this may very well be the first time in modern history that a credible presidential candidate has joined the fringe call to reinstate slavery.
This is Christian extremism at its worst.
Actually suggesting that slavery be reinstated because it falls in line with biblical law is a glowing example of the poison that is religious belief and just why it is so important the US remain secular and free from the hands of such draconian thinking.
This should end the debate as to whether or not the Bible endorses Slavery
Sam this is a really redundant question about Slavery, the Bible, Jews, Christians, Muslims, America and Huckabee etc. . .
Yes, the bible endorsed slavery. Slavery exist for over 6000 plus years and it continues in Islamic and tribal and even up in Alaska Native american culture.
You're trying to much to build a bridge and wild consensus in your headline Post and Post discussion article piece. i.e. You should have narrowed down your focus.
I focused on a. b. c. e. f. g.
Huckabee is an idiot for saying those statements. 99.9999 % of Christians don't think that way.
