Tried the agencies. Fit for any office work. Too bad I left my good reputation back East. Only need to make a call. Some comedown. Don't know what you mean by going backward or against the tide. Couldn't even set up a dance school here although I'd always been able to do that in other states.

Many years ago, in the eighties, I was hired along with 27 others by a temp agency. All of us were hired as probationary employees of one company. We were given every bullshit job that no one else wanted to do and promised that most of us would become permanent hires. The day before our probationary period ended, all 28 of us were laid off.

Twenty years later, when I was in a management position, I remembered the despicable way that some employers act. I have never done this sort of thing to anyone. The newest member of my staff had been there for a year and a half. My dishwashers made more than most line cooks.
Hire good people, pay them decent wages, make sure they know what you want, and get your ass out of their way.

I never got caught up in that sort of thing, I did know a few people who went retail for a second job or to get some work experience who would be fired at the end of probation or just prior to qualifying for a dime per hour raise.
Regional places, I am sure, all have closed down now. Connection? I hope so.

Thanks for sharing.

Great philosophy. I did run into that, what I call dishonesty when, after completing a technical contract period I was told I would be called back in one month. I stated that I would use that time to relocate to the new city and was told that that month would give me the opportunity to readjust myself to the new place. After relocation I called the company a number of time and finally decided that they had no intention of "calling me back." This "dishonesty" caused me to go through the expense of relocation only to discover that I was now "stuck." I do wish the people in the SW would be less "nice" and more "honest." I prefer those who can say "get out of my face" to those with which one never knows where one stands.

The last part, get your ass out of the way, is the most important. If you don't trust them to do what you hired and trained them to do, you're a jerk.

Nope. We were discussing the brain fart involved when you can't think of asparagus but you can think of asbestos.

You are incompetent also. There is also a little matter of you get what you pay for. When you pay minimum wage, you get minimum work. Competitive wages is a cynical euphemism for pretty much the same bullshit wages everyone else is paying.

Reverse sundowning. I had no Liberal staff to prompt the onset of dementia.

Nice try. Why not just go back and read the post with your brain turned on and then apologize for knee jerking because you didn't read what was actually said.
This isn't the main section. There is no reason for people here to jump on you, disagreement can be civil.
The times you sound least reasonable are when you worry more about creating a snarky response than processing the written word.

Also Texas where I met two girls running a shop who didn't know how to take 10% of a number.

What about making change? Especially when throwing pennies in.

As a "cute" side note of taking 10% of a number...perhaps they were thinking that for a rightie it might be approximately "numbe" while for a leftie it might be approximately "umber."

Other than for those like me who add the change AFTER the cashier has rung up the final order the machine does that calculation.
I make sure that I am ready to do it when I use cash. Love to get rid of those pennies.
Most, though, are able to do that one, I find.

Isn't that chipped beef?
LOL, my mother used to cook that from little glass jars because my father LOVED it from his navy days.
We ate it without complaint, I can't imagine allowing it to pass by my lips today.

Sundowning is a condition that afflicts elderly people with mild dementia, they become more confused and less functional at the end of the day when they are tired. My reply was no snarkier than your comment.
