The Blame Game

Dan Uffner

The partial shutdown of the U.S. Government has now entered the fifth day with neither the Democrats nor Republicans showing any sign of blinking. However, there is no diminution of accusations by one Party that the opposing Party is to blame.

Are both right? Both wrong? Or is one right and the other wrong? Let's review the actions in each branch of Congress of the last few days - the Senate controlled by the Democrats and the House controlled by the Republicans.

The House passed a Continuing Resolution that funded the entire U.S. Government, but excluded any funding for the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. It was rejected by the Senate.

The Senate passed a so-called "clean bill" which included funding for the entire U.S. government and included funding for Obamacare. It was rejected by the House.

The House passed H.J. Res. 72 to continue appropriations for veterans' benefits for fiscal year 2014. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.R. 3230 for pay and allowances for members of the National Guard and military reserves. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.R. Res. 85 to fund the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the 2014 fiscal year. No action by the Senate. However, both branches subsequently allowed some furloughed employees back to assist against possible damage by the named storm Karen.

The House passed H.R. 3241 to fund payment to civilian personnel, including National Guardsmen and military technicians, in the Department of Defense for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J. Res. to fund the Food and Drug Administration for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.R. 3239 making funds available for the continuation of FBI emergency and critical training programs in the event of a government shutdown. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J. Res. 80 to fund the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education and Indian Health Services. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J. Res. 87 to fund the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J.Res. 78 to fund National Intelligence programs for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J. Res. 75 to fund the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.J. Res. 81 to fund the National Nuclear Security Administration and Environmental Management of the Department of Energy for the 2014 fiscal year. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.R. 3234 to withhold pay of Members of Congress, the President, and Vice President if a government shutdown is in effect or the Government is unable to make payments or meet obligations because the public debt limit has been reached. No action in the Senate.

The House passed H.R. 3231 to fund law enforcement, crime prevention, and victim services programs of the Department of Justice. No action in the Senate.

Let's ask the question again, "Which Party is shutting down the Government, and which one is trying to keep the Government operating?"

Our GOP didn't think this was going to be their ace in hand in their lib poker game, did they? If so, their tunnel vision made them forget jokers are wild and dems have a slew of jokers in the media.

The Tea Potty via Speaker Boner is saying, "We don't have the v**es for a clean CR, so WE will decide what shall be Opened and what shall remain Closed. The Dems are saying no to the Tea Potty and claiming "we, Dems and reasonable Republicans, do have the v**es to pass a clean CR and Open All." So why doesn't Speaker Boner call for a v**e on a clean CR and prove his point thereby proving the Dems wrong?

DeeDee-why don't you read the list that banjojack offered-it is plain that Harry Reid has not taken up any of the bills, passed by the House of Representatives to re-open government, in the Senate. Also, this is a manufactured shut down by Reid and Obama. Their intention is the pay the workers who have been furloughed so it is a vacation for government workers. They could be at work today if Obama gives the word but they want this shut down to continue. As far as I am concerned they can shut down congress, and the white house for the balance of the year and we will do fine. Good Luck America !!!

...and why doesn't Reid have a v**e on any of the authorizations the House passed ... because even kids dying isn't important enough to that ideologue

Because the US Government should not be dictated to by the Right Fringe. Our very country, our very Democracy depends on sensible politicians willing to compromise, but one can't compromise with the Tea Potty...they don't recognize compromise as a value.

DeeDee-so the government should be dictated by left wing wackos as it is now. The democrat term for compromise is "do it our way or the highway". As Dr. Paul aptly put it, democrats have big hearts but small brains." Democrats like to do good with other people's money but are miserly when it comes to their own. You don't even know what the TEA party stands for and are just repeating the democrat talking points. Unfortunately, mind numbed robots like you are allowed to v**e. Good Luck America !!!

I think we are traveling new ground. I have never seen anything like the Tea Potty, but perhaps you have. How did it work out with "NO" to any and all proposals?

Hello DeeDee, Wanna make five hundred bucks? Show me the word "Democracy" in our Constitution once. One time, that's all. Shall we move on to "sensible politicians," willing to compromise? Were you paying attention when Obamacare was passed in the House? Not a single Republican v**ed for it. Partisan politics? Maybe. Speaker Pelosi refused to allow the Bill to be read, refused to allow any debate, as is the normal procedure for EVERY OTHER Bill in the House. It was passed by a majority v**e by Democratic Senators, not a single one of whom had read the Bill, or had any idea what was in it except what the Speaker said was in it. I don't think this has been done before, Compromise? In the Senate, Harry Reid refused to allow debate on the Bill, refused to allow any Amendments to be offered, and it was passed once again, by a Democratic majority, without a SINGLE Democrat having read the Bill they just v**ed for. Not a single Republican v**ed for this Bill. No debate, no amendments, no reading of the Bill, NONE of the normal procedures for passing even the most minor legislation, much less something this important. This Bill that was repeatedly, on national TV, touted as "not a tax," then defended in the Supreme Court as "well, yeah, we lied, it IS a tax." Right wing wackos. If you say so.

DeeDee-the TEA party is a group of conservatives who feel that they have been TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY and that we need to rein in government spending and cut down the size of government rather than make it larger. The democrats in congress only know one way to govern and that is to Tax and Spend. Our country is flat broke and we are 17 trillion in debt. The conservatives are saying that before we raise the debt ceiling, which would allow the country to borrow even more money beyond the 17 trillion, we want to sit down and talk about areas where we can reduce spending so that our children will not have a debt which they cannot repay on their hands. Harry Reid, Obama and the democrats in the Senate say no talks on anything. The democrats want the debt ceiling raised without any restrictions so they can spend as much as they want for wh**ever they want to spend it on. Unfortunately, there are enough people on the receiving end of government largesse that the country is being driven into bankruptcy. When the money runs out completely and no other country is willing to lend us money, because our debt is too large, all government checks stop and the result is civil war. Obama has added more debt in five years than all of the other presidents combined. The TEA Party is merely trying to slow that down and are being demonized by people who do not have a clue as to what is going on and the fact that we are on shaky ground fiscally. The democrats love the poor as they have created another 40million of them since Obama took office. If you believe what CNN and MSNBC are telling you then you will never get the facts. Good Luck America!!!

Newsflash! The "furloghed non-essential government workers" are getting paid! They are getting paid not to come to work. What government shutdown? These clowns are getting paid. They are staying at home because your boy Obama told them too. Shutdown my ass! Political grandstanding. All or most of these poor, overpaid bureaucrats are still collecting paychecks, the only difference being that they are not working at home, as opposed to not working at work.

Banjojack-since 800,000 federal employees are considered non-essential we should fire half of them. Heck, they are non-essential so why have them on the payroll at all. Good Luck America!!!

You may have missed the news - suspect where you get yours isn't reporting the whole t***ht - it is Obama and Reid who refuse to even talk, let alone comprise.

Further, the majority of the "people's House" is hardly a fringe to aneone not themselves on the fringe.
