What do you think would happen if every one put aside their differences as to political views, put aside their liberal or conservative leanings. What if we all just decided to be human beings, eliminate hatred, put aside grudges. What would happen if we all decided to work for one common goal no matter what our differences may be. Just every person on this planet deciding to work together so that we can be in control of our own destinies.

I understand that this is impossible within this world we live in. But what if. Are we even capable of putting our own needs aside for the greater good, humanity as a whole. Or are we willing to turn our back on humanity to only think of ourselves.

As one we die, as a united group we live.

In small groups it works well. Look at what happens in small rural communities when disaster strikes, the majority community comes together to overcome it.

The problem is not as simple as just coming together for a common goal as the group size grows. This is simply because the common goal has more connotations the larger the group. The route to achieve the common goal, by nature in a large group, also becomes vague because you will have one side saying it needs to be done this way and another side saying it needs to be done that way, and possibly another side that disagrees with all solutions.

Simple problems needing solved by small groups can be done with little to no adversity.

Simple problems, as well as simple solutions, do not exist in larger groups.

A lot of people have pointed out teh obvious problem that would need to be overcome. I want to point out the conflict and adversity (not necessarily war and hatred, but less intense than that) is also how we problem-solve and spur creation in our society. Although we have an inclination to be contrary and to try to dominate with our ideas, there is still a desire to get a broad acceptance of our ideas and form alliances. We desire to get along in the end. This internal conflict (we are contrary but want to get along with others) is what helps our species to advance. Maybe it is not so bad if not taken to an extreme.

Just a thought.

As was pointed out previously, it usually takes a common tragedy for people to come together and do the right thing. It is only the panic of helplessness that unites people when things go extremely bad. We united to become free in 1776, as many people will do when things get overwhelming. Hurricanes, earthquakes, are all uniting events. Of course we also unit for something pleasurable, but only then as observers, not doers.

I disagree with your premise that it takes a tragedy to unite people. Any common goal can unite a group of people. If you look at the Amish society, the collective, and believe me I h**e using that word, come together to build homes and barns and the like for newly married couples, even today. I would not call that a tragedy, unless you, like me, disagree with the concept of marriage in its current inception.

Yes, when tragedies do strike, you do get people who volunteer with rescue, then clean up, but once the major work is done, they no longer associate.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when a group of people come together, someone is always leading. When two or more people want to lead, contention ensues.

You seem to agree, that unity for pleasure is a sure thing, ie Amish. But to unite for a possible thing, or a miserable thing, usually requires that some fear or pleasure be involved. The person or persons that can tap into that and vocalize it is usually the driving force. We usually call these persons those with charisma. A seemingly magnetic force of personality that reaches the hidden urging 's in ourselves. There is no limit on the number of people that can do that, they just have to emerge.
Have caution though, charlatans are rampant, and will seize the opportunity to profit from any kind of group effort.

Ahhh, but who would decide what that "common goal" should be?
