Sweet baby Jesus: Mike Huckabee says poor people convicted of nonviolent crimes should be sold into s***ery, because the Bible.
The former Arkansas Governor and Republican p**********l candidate endorsed “biblical” s***ery over the modern prison system on Wednesday’s edition of “Mickelson in the Morning,” a leading conservative Iowa radio program.
ThinkProgress reports.
Host Jan Mickelson began by bemoaning that the “criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives.” In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus. “It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold,” Mickelson explained. “If they don’t have anything, we’re supposed to take them down and sell them.”
Mickelson went on to argue why jails, which he claimed are a “pagan invention,” are inferior to s***ery: “We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, they’re supposed to be working off the debt.”
“Wouldn’t that be a better choice?” the host asked.
“Well, it really would be… Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”
That’s right, Huckabee says Biblical s***ery is preferable to the contemporary criminal justice system. ThinkProgress notes:
Huckabee’s comments … appear to be the first time in modern history that a credible p**********l candidate has joined the fringe call to reinstate s***ery.
It is no secret that Huckabee is a Christian extremist. In the recent past Huckabee promised that if elected president he would fight the “secular theocracy” that is supposedly destroying Christian liberty in America; made the false claim that pastors would face civil and criminal penalties if they refused to perform same-sex marriage; and said if elected president he would ignore the Supreme Court ruling on marriage e******y because the Supreme Court is not the “Supreme Being.”

Perhaps one should first investigate the Jewish acceptance and restrictions on s***ery before going off half cocked. The ens***ement of b****s and other races cannot be compared to Jewish s***ery. As often as not an individual sold himself into s***ery to keep from starving. And after six years they had to be freed and generously compensated. Joseph Wilson in the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, Georgia in January 1861:
Now, we have already seen that the Holy Spirit employs words which He [sic] has intended to be understood as distinctly enunciating the existence of domestic servitude—that He has sent to all the world a volume of t***h, which is indisputably addressed to men who hold s***es and to the s***es who possess masters—and that, from the connections in which these highly suggestive words occur, He has included s***ery as an organizing element in that family order which lies at the very foundation of Church and State.

And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.”

Little-Known Bible Verses VI: S***ery
May 9, 2007 by Adam Lee
Of all the civil rights movements that have swept across America in its history, none is so intimately connected with religion in the popular consciousness as the struggle against r****m. Civil rights leaders like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. were famous for their use of biblical allusions to demand liberty for all human beings, and from their writings, many believers today have gotten the idea that the Bible teaches the e******y of all people. But nothing could be farther from the t***h, as we can see from a set of little-known Bible verses.
The so-called Good Book explicitly, repeatedly and unequivocally endorses and approves of s***ery, presenting it as an institution directly sanctioned by God. Consider the following passage from Leviticus, which is one of a long list of instructions spoken by God to Moses:
“Thy bond-men and thy bond-maids which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you: of them shall ye buy bond-men and bond-maids. Moreover, of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land. And they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession, they shall be your bond-man forever.”
—Leviticus 25:44-46
The idea that human beings can be bought and sold like possessions, and that this state should last in perpetuity, is a repugnant one that lies at the root of all the cruelties and inhumanities associated with s***ery. But perhaps the Bible teaches that s***eowners should be kind and gentle to their servants, and the cruelty is a later development? Not quite:
“When a man strikes his s***e, male or female, with a rod and the s***e dies under his hand, he shall be punished. But if the s***e survives a day or two, he is not to be punished; for the s***e is his money.”
—Exodus 21:20-21 (RSV)
Not only does the Bible explicitly allow beating your s***es, it allows you to beat them to death, just as long as the s***e does not immediately expire from the beating but lingers for a few days before dying. Can anyone dispute the savagery of such a law? Can anyone dispute that a book that teaches such things deserves the allegiance of no good person?
But the verses cited so far are all from the Old Testament. Surely Jesus, who taught a gospel of love and compassion, would have cast aside these cruel laws just as he nullified many other parts of the Mosaic law?
If you think so, you’re bound to be disappointed. Although Jesus abrogates the Old Testament provisions on kosher dining and not working on Sabbath days, he has not a word to say about the injustice of s***ery. In fact, on one occasion he works s***ery into a parable as if it were the most natural thing in the world, favorably comparing God to a s***eholder who beats his s***es for not obeying him:
“The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.”
—Luke 12:46-47
But even if the Bible does not explicitly condemn s***ery in general, surely it commands Christians not to personally participate in this cruel custom, and to set free any s***es they may own? Nope:
“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit.”
—1 Timothy 6:1-2
In fact, as the above passage shows, the biblical authors considered it blasphemous for a s***e to disobey or dishonor his owner – as if rebelling against s***ery was sin against God.
These verses and others like them were not overlooked by s***eholders of the American antebellum. On the contrary, in the period leading up to the American Civil War, Southern s***eholders repeatedly cited these verses against abolitionists, as proof that s***ery was a just and proper institution sanctioned by God. (Indeed, the Southern Baptist Convention – the largest Protestant denomination in the United States – was formed expressly to defend the continued practice of s***ery.) Consider the following sermon, “Mutual Relation of Masters and S***es as Taught in the Bible“, which was preached by one Joseph Wilson in the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, Georgia in January 1861:
Now, we have already seen that the Holy Spirit employs words which He [sic] has intended to be understood as distinctly enunciating the existence of domestic servitude—that He has sent to all the world a volume of t***h, which is indisputably addressed to men who hold s***es and to the s***es who possess masters—and that, from the connections in which these highly suggestive words occur, He has included s***ery as an organizing element in that family order which lies at the very foundation of Church and State.
Wilson’s sermon argues at length for the scriptural foundation of s***ery, and the t***h is, he is absolutely correct. S***ery unequivocally is taught throughout the Bible. The abolitionists who opposed it – who were both religious and secular – were on the right side morally, as everyone now recognizes; but theologically, the s***eholders had the upper hand. Only by sweeping these verses under the carpet could a religious case be made for abolition.
In the era in which the Bible was written, s***ery was a common and natural part of society. But humanity has progressed morally, and we now recognize that s***ery is a cruel and inhumane institution that deserves only eradication. If the biblical authors had access to a source of revelation not limited by human ignorance, we might have expected them to see what was truly right and condemn this harsh practice in no uncertain terms. But they do no such thing. Instead, they treat s***ery as if it were natural and normal, working it into parables and teachings and even defending it as God’s will. The best explanation for these facts and others like them is that the Bible is simply a human creation, forged in the popular beliefs and prejudices of its time, and not informed by revelation from a being with a higher perspective.

“Wouldn’t that be a better choice?” the host asked.

“Well, it really would be… Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”

It was directed towards PadreMike. He seems to be attempting to justify Biblical S***ery as something other than it is. S***ery is wrong.

This is probably the incorrect place to post this comment; however, Aunti is, again, distraught. Nary a response did you provide to my commentary. Was the video unacceptable? :?: :( :-(

Mike Huckabee says that prison reform should be centered around s***ery
October 16, 2015 by Dan Arel

Republican p**********l candidate Mike Huckabee stopped by the conservative talk radio program Mickelson in the Morning when the host, Jan Mickelson started to complained that the “criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives.”
According to Think Progress, Mickelson put forth a plan to the former governor, suggesting that biblical s***ery could be the answer.
In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus.
And when Mike Huckabee, a man campaigning to run the United States and uphold the Constitution was asked if selling poor criminals into s***ery was a better choice, he said:
“Well, it really would be… Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”
That’s right, Huckabee said yes.
Think Progress noted that this may very well be the first time ” in modern history that a credible p**********l candidate has joined the fringe call to reinstate s***ery.”
This is Christian extremism at its worst. Actually suggesting that s***ery be reinstated because it falls in line with biblical law is a glowing example of the poison that is religious belief and just why it is so important the US remain secular and free from the hands of such draconian thinking.

The problems, once again, lay with different t***slations of the Bible and the new contemporary redefinition of "s***ery" as an all inclusion of forms of ancient labor: "forced labor from prisoners of war," "indentured servatide for unpaid debts" and "restitution for stolen property" whereas in ancient days of barter, TIME = MONEY.

There has been a concerted effort of the Progressive Socilist to mangle the message in the 1960s, rewriting the Bible, of which our Declaration of Independence and Constitution was founded, to nullify the Natural Law it was founded upon: Man may rule over animals, but Man may not rule over man, only God may rule over man. as laid out in the 3rd Book of Moses in Leviticul regarding the Jubilie.
The King James Version is far closer to the orginal text of the Septaguant t***slation of the Old Testiment, 180 degrees around from the NIV t***slation of 1960.

http://biblehub.com/exodus/22-1.htm
EXODUS 22:1 NIV t***slation:
"Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep."

EXODUS 22: 1 KJV
If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and k**l it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

EXODUS 22: 2 NIV T***slation
"If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;

EXODUS 22: 2 KJV T***slation
If a thief be found breaking up [in], and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.

EXODUS 22: 3 NIV T***slation
but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed. "Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft.

EXODUS 22: 3 KJV T***slation
If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

The clue here is the word "restitution" which was repaid in time, indentured servatude, if the goods themselves could not be returned.

We have banks and credit today, or prisons. Restitution (work) is certainly more just than prison with a golf course and big screne TV and the victim is left with the loss, Yes?

Give Huckabee a break.

They were also treated as family members joining in at all festivals and celebrations and not allowed to work on the Jewish Sabbath.

As I understand it, "s***ery" was more like indebted servitude, a contract between people who out of necessity had to become the servants of someone or starve to death. If the adult man could not provide for his family, he could sell himself into s***ery so that his family would have a roof over their heads and food. There were very strict rules as to how the master must treat his s***es, and the length of time the contract was good for. It was far different from when Africans kidnapped people from other tribes or clans and sold them into s***ery, or Muslims kidnapped people and sold the women and children into sex s***es and murdered the men.

Fair enough Sam, now go to work and use your search engine get on line and find out to your own satisfaction and curiosity what Jewish s***ery was all about. You seemed quick enough to condemn based solely on your emotions without any knowledge of the issue. Afterwards, you will be ready for "a civil discussion."
