Wait a minute, a payroll tax is what I pay for receiving wages because I am selling my labor. A sales tax is just plain robbery on the buyer. He is paying for a service. the guy getting paid should pay the tax, not the guy paying. Of course it matters how my bucket is emptied. Evaporation of my bucket is what I pay for SELLING my service. The water that I lose from condensation is robbery. I am not selling anything so why must I put up for this loss. I agree that a National Sales tax is good, if it is on the SELLER, and not the buyer. Why should a person that is buying anything pay an additional tax. Let the guy that is selling the stuff pay the tax on His income. Even if you think he is just a collector of tax money, he is still selling his service, hence an income, hence a tax on income. If you think anyone will go for that, you are mistaken, People will begin bartering their goods to avoid it completely. Money is the problem, as soon as you put a value on consumption, consumption will decrease. That's what a sales tax does, it reduces consumption.

Fine. Lets do it then. A couple of points though. Any tax on business is an additional cost of doing busines. Those costs get passed on to the consumer anyway in the form of prices. We would pay our taxes at the cash register regardless as opposed to having it taken out of our paychecks. We pay federal, state and local taxes on every gallon of gasoline we buy. They are part of the price per gallon. Occasionally prices get to the point where people say "screw it! I'm just gonna stay home today!". If enough folks do that demand/consumption goes down. When that happens so do prices. We may differ a little on our perception of how this could work, but the important part is that it could work.
