Athieism has taught me that being good for goodness' sake promotes a healthy self esteem as opposed to resentment I often hear expressed from those who feel obligated to do so. How sad so many, secular and religious, do "their duty," not realizing the rewards!
The very word "duty" is not unlike sin or a form of abuse. That following one's duty may lead to deeper insight or wisdom, does not excuse duty of its many harms.
