Personally, I was not helped by being in a Union. Of course, I have a couple of buddies who were Electricians Union members who have nothing but good to say about their locals. I know that most, if not all Unions donate almost exclusively to Democratic candidates and I did not approve of my dues being used in that manner. Then when I needed some legal aid the Union was supposed to have provided it never happened.

Against. I've worked in both union and non-union shops. I've witnessed first hand the corruption of my particular union president. The biggest advantage of unions today is to protect the least productive workers and actually discourage workers from going 'above and beyond'.

In my first non-union job the company owner offered to pay my way through college to get an engineering degree of my choice so long as it benefitted the company. I politely refused the offer. In another non-union job I received 3 pay raises in one afternoon, two by the owner and one by the plant super. Why? Because I was told when hired "The more you know the more you're worth" so I learned every job in the plant and made suggestions on how to improve the way some jobs were done.

I worked in a plywood plant in the 80’s. We were unionized, and another mill went on strike, so we also had to go on strike. The daily pay was about 25% of normal wages and it went on for about a month. Maybe 6 weeks. And the end result was a 3 cent pay rise. I never did get enough money from that pay raise to equal my lost wages. Unions SUCK!

Yes, I remember my strike pay being $40 a week while Union officials continued to receive full salaries. Any wonder they are in no rush to get the settlement done.

I agree with you FDR, my experience has been that Union Officials lives vastly improved while I was told not to cross the picket line while wondering how I was going to pay the bills if strike lastly more then a few days.

I can see unions in the private sector, but even FDR had no use for unions in the public sector. Democrats have been encouraging them because they always give to Democrats. Their program is generally what can we get from the taxpayers.

I am a proud former union member (UAW) who supports workers rights including their right to form a union.

proud, I am pro union, and was the assembly rep for my school in our local NRA chapter. Technically, we were a professional organization of classroom teachers, but we bargained compensation with the county.

I'll bet that any success you had would not have happened had you shown up as an individual rather than as a member of a group. Imagine what gains could be had if the group was large enough and positioned in such way as to be able to shut the business down.

You are right about a couple of things. Unions would not work in the military or the judicial system. Dems have not been proposing anything regarding unions in those types of government departments. The post office has one of the nation's largest unions. Unions are also a huge factor in education. It's arguable as to whether that constitutes the federal or public sector. You're most f**grant error is your statement, "Their program is generally what can we get from the taxpayers". You seem to forget that every union member is a taxpayer who probably is paying a higher percentage of their wages than the guys in Washington who are trying to keep them from organizing.

The decline in the American middle class almost exactly mirrors the decline in union membership. A reinvigorated labor movement is hands down the best path to prosperity and security for working families.
