Listen to this a couple of times before you comment. Though it contains a lot of righteous anger, I think there is a lot of human, beautiful thought in this guy's poetry.

Wow, what a powerful poem. Our words can bless and curse, create or destroy. We are all ONE human race and what we communicate through our actions and words make our world what it will be ,day by day. Judgements, prejudicelies, and intolerances only create wars and selfishly demand ones own way of life.
Great WORDS. blessings to all.

Yes it was an interesting statement on how words can hurt people. The emphasis on this GLBTQ site however is that grade school children know what their sexual preferences are, and that they are fixed in stone, and the poetry was written around that false premise. None the less, words and actions can often be more hurtful in the long run than physical pain.

NPP - I think you've missed an important point of this piece of poetry. It wasn't that "gay" was used to identify the orientation of a child, but that the word was used as a sort of universal slur, which is common in young people even before they have any understanding of sexual orientation at all. I am encouraged, though, that you've used the term GLBTQ, signifying your understanding that, as a group, people struggling with their differentness have a common bond and belong to a community that will support them.

Yes, I support the L**T'S right to choose their own "presute" of happiness garenteed by our constitution. This poem covers so much more than gay recognition, it emphasized the power of our attitude with words and actions. Thank you for your comment.

Oops - I'm a bad Gay Man for not correcting NPP just a bit. The correct order for the acronym is L***Q, putting women first in the sequence:

L esbian
G ay
B i
T rans
Q ueer/questioning

Hi Rev - The "Q" in this acronym is relatively new, added in 1996 in an effort to include more youth who identified as "q***r" as they took back the power of that word from their oppressors (similar to how "n****r" gained usage in the African-American community). The "Q" serves an additional purpose of representing those who were still developing a more defined orientation identity, hence "questioning".

Hope that helps!

That has been added to the equation as the group has expanded to include people who might have same sex attractions on occasion and those who believe that there are an infinite number of g****rs, to include all sexual activity. That includes people who one day think they are male, then think they are female then later on think they are both sexes in one, then no sex at all. Those used to be people with g****r dysphoria, and it was a mental illness, .

You are right, I usually mix it up, although it doesn't matter it is the same activist groups nomenclature. I still believe that q***r is an insulting word so prefer heterosexual and homosexual, or opposite sex attracted and same sex attracted which are non judgemental terms. I also do not use gay and straight as gay has for years meant happy and carefree, and straight has meant stuffy both of which are also judgemental.

NPP - While I appreciate your input, I hardly think you are qualified to define what this self-determined acronym means. That right belongs to the community that created it. And while I very much respect your right to a personal opinion, I find the undercurrent of disdain in your commentary a little offensive. Please be clear that your comments reflect your own views, and not those of the L***Q community.

Rev -
I think confusion arises predominately in youth who, as they come into puberty, struggle with the conflict between what they are feeling as a naturally arising attraction and what the general culture is telling them they should be.

I am aware that groups have throughout history changed the meaning of words to suit their needs, so from the standpoint of people who also want to redefine marriage to include same sex, both sexes and what ever number of people who want to get married all together, the changes are acceptable. I prefer not to change the meaning of words. the left has also totally distorted the term liberal from what it meant in the time of John Locke to mean those who want a collectivist society. Most amusing of course is the Hillary change of the word broke to mean only two million dollars in assets when they left the White House. "A word can mean what I want it to mean, nothing more, nothing less" No wonder people are confused.

By the way we met two college professors last weekend at a therapy dog demonstration. They were happy and proud to admit that they were homosexual, but wanted it kept a secret that they were conservatives. Talk about a warp in logic. Hope you guys had a nice trip.

NPP - There are those of us in the community that mix it up sometimes too, so don't feel alone in that! And there are also many in our community that feel the same way as you about some of the words. The acronym L***Q is still useful I think because it does a good job of being inclusive across a broad group of unique individuals. i.e. shorthand can't define everyone, but it does the best job it can of explaining a group.
