Shouldn't his parents or care providers be charged with manslaughter. After all they knew he had a propensity for violence yet vi they allowed him to continue to drive a motor vehicle that he had previously used as a weapon

Once a person reaches the age of 21 he/she is legally responsible for themselves and the parents have no control over their behavior. It's only after they've committed a crime does the municipal government take control over that person and that's where the system fails. It becomes a revolving door if that individual is left untreated and continues to commit crimes. Just because a person suffers from a mental illness doesn't take away their human needs for love and compassion from their surrounding community. When they're treated like dangerous animals they revert back to survival mode and things get ugly. Humans respond positively to kindness and sympathy and love and conversely respond with terror and viciousness when treated inhumanely.
There are many societies in this world where they do recognize that the mentally ill are human beings and should be treated respectfully. It's rare that the mentally ill commit heinous crimes and in fact as a group they are more fearful of society hurting them and misunderstanding their needs.
The rarer cases of serial k**lers and dangerous homicidal maniacs do an injustice to the majority of the mentally ill who only wish to live in peace and cause no harm.

I don't blame his mom, he will always be her son, but what about his victims?? Like youngest victim, Jackson Sparks who will never grow up, or go to school, have his birthdays, or get married someday...What about his family??? In my opinion he's right where he should be in prison....I hope for life!!

Ditto! Ditto!

That's true. Why wasn't Mommy and daddy charged. I'm tired of hearing about how Society" failed these "kids". Society didn't get the pleasure of making them but are suppose to be responsible for rearing them?

I posted this on another thread:

As much as the ELWNJ would like to make this about guns - it is really more about parental responsibility. In this case it involves guns; but this could be a seminal event for other issues. If the parents are successfully prosecuted - think about the possible repercussions.

Should parents be held accountable if their child k**ls someone while drunk driving?

At what age is the parent no longer responsible? If he is being charged as an 'adult', how can the parents be responsible?

I don't really believe that parents should be held responsible for what their teen and adult children do, especially of this nature. But I am getting tired of being told that "society failed these kids/adults. These are sick people, they are not sick because I wasn't there to make them a peanut butter sachwich or help them with their homework. In most cases it is probably a chemical imbalance in the brain or other MH/medical factor outside a parents control. But there are kids who are raised in h**e, I am nor responsible for that, not is society.

I tend to agree with you. Sort of goes back to the 'nature vs. nuture' argument that has been going on for decades.

There are countless examples of kids raised in a horrible environment who become great adults. There are kids raised in great environments who become scumbags.
