Geneva - The Ebola epidemic ravaging parts of West Africa which has taken at least 932 lives has been declared an international health emergency by the World Health Organisation, which has appealed for global aid to help afflicted countries.
The decision came after a rare, two-day closed-door meeting of the UN Emergency Committee convened by the WHO Director-General under the International Health Regulation which requires exit screening of all people flying out of affected countries.
The WHO stopped short of calling for global travel restrictions, urging airlines to take strict precautions but to continue flying to the area.

This is currently the largest EVD outbreak ever recorded. In response to the outbreak, a number of unaffected countries have made a range of travel related advice or recommendations. After the deliberation on the information provided, the Committee advised that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa constitutes an 'extraordinary event' and a public health risk to other States.
"The possible consequences of further international spread are particularly serious in view of the virulence of the v***s, the intensive community and health facility t***smission patterns, and the weak health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries," the WHO experts stated.
The committee advised the nations to have a coordinated international response, which is essential to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola.
"It was the unanimous view of the Committee that the conditions for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) have been met," the WHO announced.
The UN organization called on countries and airports around the globe to be prepared to "detect, investigate and manage" Ebola cases if they should arise. <snip>
