Yep! I watched a video awhile back with kids running barrels in helmets! They take some of these safety steps way too far, IMO! The kids don’t have a clue what “Shake it Off” means! 😀

Now they don’t get boo boo’s. They faint when someone says boo.

I found it! I watched all three races....Belmont, Kentucky Derby, Preakness! Those two horses were amazing! I don’t know that Alydar wasn’t more impressive than Affirmed! He came from 8th position to right behind Affirmed in the KD! I wonder if there are more Triple Crown winners that were the same first and second place winners like those two? More research! 😁

Those are the only two that have done that. I liked Alydar better that Affirmed. Lol

Are there any racing fans out there in OPP Land? I’ve always enjoyed watching the Derby every year. I grew up watching racing with my Dad and have continued to enjoy it. It’s a little strange not seeing all the fans and the Southern atmosphere with all those Big hats, but the thrill of the race will be the same. I love to hear the stories especially about the trainers, that’s a key component of these horses winning.

I’ve been reviewing the horses and watching some of their races and this is my prediction.....just for fun!

I think that the favorite Tiz the Law will win unless something happens! He has the speed and the consistency!

The real question is who will place second, third, and forth! I don’t think the horse Authentic will hold up for
1 1/4 mile. In the Haskell race, NY Traffic almost caught up with him! If he had of had two more strides, NY Traffic would have won! He gets stronger the farther he goes! He sticks that nose out front and reaches out with those front legs! Authentic just didn’t have it! In the Santa Anita race, Authentic was far the favorite but was beat by Honor A.P. ! I think this grey horse will place second and Honor A.P. third and Authentic forth!

I’ve never gotten all these right yet.........but I sure enjoy the race and betting with my husband!

We used to breed and train racehorses. Never had anything that could run in the Derby. We ran in Nebraska mainly, but did run some in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and even ran a couple in Winnipeg. It was a lot of work, but enjoyable. It was a family business, after my dad passed we looked to continue but others in the family only saw the dollar signs they could get for selling the farm. I didn't fight it because of my wife's health issues made it so our best move was into town. Miss being out there most of the time, but don't miss the flooding or doing chores in a blizzard.

We never made it to any greyhound races, but I grew up with them. They were always part of our family! One of our favorite pastimes was coyote and jack rabbit hunting. One of my favorites was a big black Stag hound. He was gentle as a kitten with us but fierce when it came to coyotes!

Those greyhounds will run just to be running, don't have to be chasing anything. Gentle dogs loving and well behaved.

I had a blast in Shreveport in a skybox watching horse racing.
Had never been in my life.
I bet on the quinella.
I won every time.
I would use 2 announcer picks and for my third pick, I'd look at the horses and jockey names. I picked the name I liked and used that for my third pick.
It worked.
Two guys pouring over their racing forms asked me how I was picking. They couldn't believe it.
I bet on 6 races and won on all.

You can't always trust those tip sheets they sell or the bookies. My brother was getting ready to go to the track, we had a mare coming off an injury and needed a race and we caught one with a short field. A coworker of his wanted him to bet on a horse (our horse) his bookie said the trainers were pointing to that race. I had been picking horses since high school and my record was as good as the pros making their picks in the newspaper and on the tip sheets. I seldom bet and never more than I could afford to lose. I came out ahead almost all the time.

I was happy with my winnings.
All together, I bet $18.00 and won $176.00.
I went to another horse race around Dallas or Grapevine, not sure where. Bet once and lost.
I haven't gone to a race since except to Zia Park in Hobbs, but I don't bet. Those jockies over there are fat and I'm not kidding.

My Grandmother went to a race with my parents once, she made a large wager ($2.00) and lost. After that she sat clutching her purse as if there were an army of purse snatchers around waiting to make off with her purse.
Another time I got detailed to take care of a family friend when one their horses ran. I didn't know what I was in for until the horses went to the gate. She turned around, shut her eyes, and put her fingers in her ears. She stayed like that until the race ended. Their horse won and I had to tell her everything was okay and we needed to go to the winner's circle.
We once had a horse being saddled in the paddock, where you normally see horses getting worked up. My Dad (the trainer) and the others were talking to the jockey going over strategy for the race, when my Dad noticed nobody was holding the horse and he was actually sleeping. Most would take that as a bad sign, but he (the horse) was laid back and ended up going wire to wire for the win.

Hi Texacan,

I worked the $2 Place window the day before Derby Day and Derby Day about 42 years ago before everything went computerized. Was working at the Louisville, KY P.O. at the time and a lot my friends had permanent jobs at the various tracks. Since they didn't hold races at the different tracks at the same time, they would sort of follow the horses. They all worked the midnight shift at the P.O. so were able to work at the track during the day. Louisville has Churchill Downs for the thoroughbreds and Louisville Downs for the Trotters. Then they also race at Lexington, Evansville, IN, and I think Cincinnati, but I'm not sure. I only worked at Churchill Downs those two days for about five years until I got promoted to a management position in Oklahoma. Back then it paid $130 a day before taxes and losses of course.

Cool.
The worst thing I saw was a horse die on the race track.
That upset me.
