I think it's the wording of the text that's confusing you. I agree it's not real clear.
The first phrase of 3:22 explains that since man ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they lost their innocence and now knew good and evil, and hence would not live forever as originally planned.
The second phrase of 3:22 explains how humans, in their sinful condition would no longer be able to eat of the tree of life and live forever.
