This Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS) Annual Report presents information on foreign nationals found inadmis-sible, apprehended, arrested, detained, returned, or removed during 2012.1 Key findings in this report include:
1 In this report, years refer to fiscal years (October 1 to September 30).
• CBP determined 194,000 foreign nationals were inadmissible. • DHS apprehended 643,000 foreign nationals; 70 percent were citizens of Mexico.• ICE detained approximately 478,000 foreign nationals, an all-time high.• 230,000 foreign nationals were returned to their home countries without a removal order. • DHS removed 419,000 foreign nationals from the United States.2 The leading countries of origin for those removed were Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.• Expedited removal orders accounted for 163,000, or 39 percent, of all removals.• Reinstatements of final orders accounted for 149,000, or 36 percent, of all removals.• ICE removed 199,000 known criminal aliens from the United States, an all-time high.3
