Broad Ass Marine is hardly a term of endearment. Jarhead comes from the haircut and Leatherneck comes from the Barbary wars.

I'm sure the acronym still sticks but only Marines are likely to realize the meaning. Non-Marines who use it do so not understanding how they may be offending some of their listeners. Just wanted to give a heads-up.

Thank you for filling me in on the history and tradition of my beloved Corps.

BTW & FYI, a modern acceptance for the USMC acronym 'BAM' is Beautiful American Marine. Either way, BAM is okay with the Old Corps.

It just has a negative sound about it as the first thought
that came to my mind was "slam bam thank you mam"
which would have been a negative at least in my mind it would.

That's because you are a deviate, Bahmer.

No telling what you think of 'Squid,' 'Swabbie,' 'Deck-Ape,' 'Water Lily,' or 'Jarhead,' 'Leatherneck,' 'Devil Dog,' 'Gyrene,' etc. They all fall into the category of inter/intra service slang humor. Military slang is part and parcel of being in the service.

True I have never served but I have looked up where some of the names have come from and what there meanings are and I can understand some of the others that I have not looked up but may in the future.

We used to refer to the Squids as marching milk bottles.

My father-in-law (an ex-Squid) once jokingly referred to my children's GodFather (a retired USMC Major General) as a 'sea-going bellhop.' To which General Ed Meyers replied, "The last belle I hopped was your old lady."

All, of course, was said in good-natured humor.
