Having spent over 75% (and counting) of my life in Texas, I think Texas will kick anyone's ass, especially those that don't have the respite of air conditioning.

So now you freeze your buns in Iowa rather than Michigan. Michigan was good training grounds for bun freezing. Having once lived there, against my will, I have never been warm since.

Actually I thought Michigan was a breeze in the winter compared to Iowa. Lake MI always kept it warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Hardly any wind there because of all the trees and the lake effect snow was beautiful. Iowa is terribly windy, sometimes 50 to 60 below with the wind chill and little flakes that blow up to drifts as hard as rocks. But...my heart and.soul is here in Iowa's cos this is where my girls are. So I just embrace my zipcode. Haaah

What do I really want? Though this may seem rather rhetorical, I want a more perfect Union, wherein Justice is established, domestic Tranquility insured, our common defense provided, the general Welfare promoted, and the Blessings of Liberty secured to ourselves and our Posterity.

As long as it's your union, your Justice, tranquility by who? What do you call common defense? More welfare for people who don't need it, instead of working? And how do you discribe security of liberty?

Welcome to OPP Otisimo! You sound like a very down to earth person like many here who are also veterans. Enjoy the discourse and dont take anything to heart if possible and just be you.

Hello all 😎
About a year ago I became aware of OPP and started following it on a daily basis. I had been reading Daily Kos for a while but wondered what the other side of the story was. I want to start by saying that I am not a Democrat nor a Republican, I am an American! I believe that the political divide in this country is counterproductive to our nation and the world and we must put aside derisive rhetoric and come together as the one people we truly are, Americans!
The issues that separate us are not nearly as important as the ones that bind us together and make us one people and nation

I was raised by loving parents on a small farm in S.W. Michigan and learned from my father and mother a work ethic that has served me well my entire life. I have tried to instill that same work ethic in my children to a lessor or greater degree. All you can do as they grow is try to teach by example and simply be there for them. I can truly say that I am proud of all of them! πŸ‘. A blessing to be sure. πŸ™

I worked as a salesman and sales manager for most of my life and enjoyed a decent income and life until an injury forced me to retire at the age of 50. I currently live in western New York State with my wife and her mother and our golden-doodle. (Who is the real boss of the family. Lol ). I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1976 for 4 years active and 2 years reserve. Took basic training at Great Mistakes Illinois in February of that year and have been cold ever since. Lol
Most of my time these days is spent on music and reading and the ever present honey- list. I look forward to having positive discourse with you all here on OPP as we come together as the true Americans that we are whether conservatives or liberal.

Thank you for your time.
Otis

Michigan, to me, as tantamount to being in the Arctic Circle. I was born and reared in Florida until my 16th year when my parents uprooted the family and t***sported us to that G*dforsaken Yankee land. I will, however, admit I didn't know what cold weather was really like until I got to Korea. Minus 30Β° below was just a wee bit more than Michigans 20Β° above.

Great Mistakes...1980. Got there in November! Welcome! Have fun.

I switched from Libertarian to Republican so I could vent my displeasure with politics as usual by messing with them in the primaries.

What I'm not is a typical Republican.

I believe that.

I also believe it's easy (and OK) to not be neutral and still be friends with the folks you vehemently disagree with.

If I might make another quick comment without giving it too much thought. Hemi does seem to put us under a rather dark cloud but, having lived in this Great Country for nearly 80 years, I feel that the extremes politically, morally, spiritually and about every other way are much further apart than they were even 50 or 60 years ago. I don't really know why that is so but I know it is true. Food for thought as they say.

I'm the optimist around here and I'm telling everyone WWIII is looming. Ain't that so?

Right above Chicago, the wind off the lake blew lake-effect snow against all the buildings. We had to dig them out 24/7. I picked a stupid time to enlist.

I think the real bottom line of that is, how big an element? If it is over 50% then I agree, that is a recipe for ruin. I don’t believe that to be the case tho so I believe in live and let live.

Does live and let live include letting public schools and universities promote such a change?

If so it won't be long before the recipe is done.

Perhaps most folks, then, since we're still a majority and we're reasonable, in charge and safe, might consider that important, do you think?

It might be interesting to have a thread to discuss sovereignty (i.e., the authority of a state to govern itself or another state) and what might threaten it.

I think that's a grand idea!

I think the whole idea of Union is not a your or a my thing, but an our thing (not in the Cosa Nostra sense). Because it is an our thing, all the other things mentioned (Justice, domestic Tranquility, etc.) require us to come to some mutual understanding, a difficult endeavor.

If by "true American", you mean, a citizen of the United States of America, then I am one. However, because I have a habit of v****g for Democratic Party candidates, many on OPP will call me a T*****r.

I hope you are able to find the "positive discourse" you are looking for here on OPP. My experience has found it mostly absent, but if you enjoy invective and ad hominem argument, you will find OPP rewarding.
(I seem to be a******lly pessimistic today. )

I will remember that and be nice. You can cheer up a little.
