Hi,Otis Welcome to the squiggly pit of biassed discourse and occasional nuggets of logic. Here you can find some gems of wisdom buried under
the occasional sludge of ignorance and prejudice.
I am pleased to read your contribution, both for hearing about your background and also to note that you know how to spell, punctuate, and write correctly. (I assume you know the difference between the words there, their, and they're? ).
Western NY can get cold too. What was your MOS?

Otis can write correctly. That makes one of you. While you were busy bemoaning the lack of epistolary eloquence here on OPP, you managed to misspell biased.
Semi-colon rather than a comma after contribution.

Perhaps the "biassed" was intentional, as in two jackassed (doubly foolish), and who really is certain of the mysteries of semicolon use?

Nope, the 'biassed" was a misspelling; intentional or not. Trying to foist it off as anything else is indeed doubly foolish. As to your query regarding the "mysteries of semicolon use;" anyone with reasonable grammatical sk**ls is certain of the usage. (You will also note my own intentional deletion of the hyphen in semi-colon above; this is because either spelling is considered correct.)

Well, because both is a coordinating conjunction some "authorities" suggest a semicolon not be used. Some suggest that the semicolon be thought of as a super-comma, to be read as a longer pause. Since the both provides a bit of a pause, adding the extra pause of the semicolon is unnecessary. As to comma usage, I was taught, "When in doubt, leave it out". But I prefer copious comma usage. And using reasonable and grammar together has always seemed oxymoronic to me.

By the way, biassed is an acceptable spelling according to:
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/biassed

But I still prefer my interpretation.

What do I really want? Though this may seem rather rhetorical, I want a more perfect Union, wherein Justice is established, domestic Tranquility insured, our common defense provided, the general Welfare promoted, and the Blessings of Liberty secured to ourselves and our Posterity.

Amen.

Rockford, home of Hush Puppy shoes! Beautiful place on the banks of the Grand River. I used to go there and buy my shoes at the factory outlet store.

I think the whole idea of Union is not a your or a my thing, but an our thing (not in the Cosa Nostra sense). Because it is an our thing, all the other things mentioned (Justice, domestic Tranquility, etc.) require us to come to some mutual understanding, a difficult endeavor.

Unions distroyed this country! They were created only for laborer's back in the days. For people who broke their back's while getting paid almost nothing . Then everyone jumped on the band wagon, and corrupt the whole system. Even the government! So don't tell me about unions!

Hello all 😎
About a year ago I became aware of OPP and started following it on a daily basis. I had been reading Daily Kos for a while but wondered what the other side of the story was. I want to start by saying that I am not a Democrat nor a Republican, I am an American! I believe that the political divide in this country is counterproductive to our nation and the world and we must put aside derisive rhetoric and come together as the one people we truly are, Americans!
The issues that separate us are not nearly as important as the ones that bind us together and make us one people and nation

I was raised by loving parents on a small farm in S.W. Michigan and learned from my father and mother a work ethic that has served me well my entire life. I have tried to instill that same work ethic in my children to a lessor or greater degree. All you can do as they grow is try to teach by example and simply be there for them. I can truly say that I am proud of all of them! 👍. A blessing to be sure. 🙏

I worked as a salesman and sales manager for most of my life and enjoyed a decent income and life until an injury forced me to retire at the age of 50. I currently live in western New York State with my wife and her mother and our golden-doodle. (Who is the real boss of the family. Lol ). I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1976 for 4 years active and 2 years reserve. Took basic training at Great Mistakes Illinois in February of that year and have been cold ever since. Lol
Most of my time these days is spent on music and reading and the ever present honey- list. I look forward to having positive discourse with you all here on OPP as we come together as the true Americans that we are whether conservatives or liberal.

Thank you for your time.
Otis

Both is not a coordinating conjunction. There are seven of those.
http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/coordinatingconjunction.htm
Semicolons are used to prevent run on sentences.
A semicolon is indicated to prevent a run on sentence in this case.

Reasonable is used as an adjective in my sentence. There is nothing oxymoronic about suggesting that someone possess a modicum of grammatical knowledge.
I must admit that you [sort of] got me on biased. "Biassed" is an acceptable spelling, the same as other British spellings such as colour and centre are acceptable but not preferred.

Electrician on U.S.S. Piedmont ( Destroyer Tender) in San Pedro. And then briefly back at Great Lakes as a training instructor. Nothing too exciting but wouldn’t trade the experience for anything, I learned a ton about the real world.

Wolverines...the best you can buy as far as I'm concerned. It truly is a beautiful little town. Use to run in and go to the coffee shop to pick up my Traverse City cherry coffee. Sometimes if it was winter I would hang around and play some chess by the fireplace with an elderly gentleman named John. What an intelligent man. We would talk politics and he would snag me bad within a couple of moves on the chess board. lol. A pleasant relationship that I will always cherish.
