Actually, it wasn't bad duty. At sea 4-5 weeks then in port for about 6 days on 4 section watch. We ported in Capetown, which, at the time was a real nice city with a lot to do, at least, if you weren't black. That was during the period of Aparthied and because of that we couldn't have any blacks in the military detachment. We had a civilian crew who ran the ship and they had a few blacks, but they had to go into the black part of town when we were in Capetown and Durban. Durban was also a nice little city with plenty to do. We also stopped at Mombasa, Kenya. That was probably the best port because we were able to go on picture taking safaris into the Tsavo National Park which is about 2 million acres of wild animals. We would go from Mombasa up to the foot of Mount Kilamanjaro, Tanzania and stay in a little hotel which served dinner, then have breakfast the next morning and depart there with a couple cases of beer and sack lunches in our open top VW micro busses for the park. We would spend most of the day touring the park taking pictures of the animals just about like going to a wild animal park here only much, much bigger. We had to stop off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia once to let one of our guys come back to the states for a family emergency. He went through the U.S. Embassy who arranged his flight out. We stopped by there one other time when one of our guys was sick and the 1st class corpsman (which was all the medical we had on board) thought he had appendicitis. They sent the Embassy doctor out to examine him, but decided it was just stomach flu. On that stop, the Somalis told us if we stopped there again they would blow us out of the water! At the time the Russians had military there and had their Big Bear Radar sites near the coast. Of course, with us being a 'Spy' ship we weren't too popular there. We got into Aden, Yemen to re-fuel for one day and half the crew got to go ashore. The British were there patrolling the town in jeeps with machine guns mounted on top of them, so we felt pretty save. Aden was a duty free port so I bought an Akai reel-to-reel tape recorder while we were there for about half what they were selling for in the states. We also went into Djibuti, French Somali Land for a couple of days right after Aden. You have to remember this was the mid-60s before all the middle eastern crap started over there. So, as you can see it wasn't really all that bad. In fact, in June we had yard period in Capetown and during that time (about 28 days) I spent 8 days in the hospital recovering from a double hernia operation, then 10 days on convalescence leave in a hotel with a real sweet young lady I met before I went into the hospital. A little background, when I went for my draft physical, they discovered I had a double inguinal hernia and I ended up classified 4F. A year later, I decided I wanted to join the Navy so went to the recruiter, signed all the paperwork, etc., told him about the hernias, and he said just go take the physical and maybe they won't find them. So I went to the same place I had gone to before and sure enough they didn't find them. I kept my mouth shut and enlisted. That was in May of '63, then in May of '66 it flared up again so I went to the corpsman and, of course, he about had a runaway. Put me on light duty, I couldn't even open a filing cabinet drawer. Of course, our filing cabinets were solid steel with 2 inch walls and the drawers were extremely heavy and had combination locks because that is where we kept all our classified material, most of it Top Secret. Our first day in port for yard period I had a doctor's appointment in Capetown that morning. So he checks me out and says yes you've got a hernia and I think you might have one on the other side as well so I'm sending you to a specialist this afternoon. So i go to this little upstairs bar and cafe for lunch and there's just me and this girl in there so I tell the waiter to send her a drink, well she motions for me to come and sit with her. We left together, she accompanied me to the doctor's office, his secretary set up my surgery for Monday morning so I had to be at the hospital Sunday evening in East Capetown. The girl (and for the life of me I cannot remember her name) accompanied me back to the ship in the cab so I could tell the corpsman and my boss about what was going on. It just so happened that I had the weekend off and this was Friday. So I go back to the cab and ask her what she wanted to do and she said why don't I come with her to her sister's house. I could sleep there we could spend the weekend together then she would ride over to the hospital with me on Sunday. Wow, what a weekend. She was right there by my bedside when I woke up after surgery, and visited me every day while I was in hospital. I think I saw maybe 2 guys from the ship the whole time I was in hospital. When I got out she and I got a hotel room in the East end of Capetown and she took care of me for ten days. Those were probably the most amazing 28 days of my entire life. I probably should have married that girl and brought her back to the States! But, alas it just wasn't in the cards. The next time we were in Capetown, she had another boy friend and didn't really want to have much to do with me. Kind of broke my heart. I guess that's why I can't remember her name. Well that and the fact that it's been almost 52 years.
So as you can see, it wasn't all that bad duty after all. At least we could go up and SEE the SEA!

Very good poem! I spent a year aboard the USNS Pvt. Jose F. Valdez home ported in Capetown, South Africa. We cruised primarily in the Indian Ocean off the East coast of Africa. As you can tell from the picture we were a communications research ship (yeah, right) with all those antennas. We went as far North as Aden and we went around the cape to the West coast in October after changing out a third of the crew. At one point we were only 5 degrees from 0 - 0, but the Old Man wouldn't let us go there so we could get our Golden Shellback. Boy were we pissed. We did get to stop at Luanda, Angola and Walvis Bay, South West Africa (now Namibia). We had to stop at Walvis Bay because one of our engines had blown and we had to wait for a replacement for 4 days. We had to anchor out and use one of the life boats to get back and forth. We went back to Capetown in December for the remainder of the crew change. That's when I transferred out. That's Capetown and Table Mountain in the background.

As for AOC's "Global Warming"/"Climate Change", it really doesn't matter what we do as far as eliminating fossil fuels or CO2 or whatever. With all the volcanoes spewing their CO2 and other toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, we stop using all fossil fuels right now and it wouldn't make a bit of difference. When Mount Pinatubo blew it's top a few years ago and continued to spew ash and everything else into the atmosphere for a year, it wiped out everything we might have done up to that time. If you consider all the other volcanoes going off right now all over the world, we don't stand a chance at reducing the carbon emissions. AOC might as well just hang up her "Green New Deal" because it's not going anywhere, and it won't do one bit of good for this country or the world!!
And then there is Fukushima, which has been releasing cesium 137 into the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere since 2011, that's coming up on it's 8th anniversary. And it isn't showing any signs of slowing down. That, of course, was an Extinction Level Event, which will eventually depopulate the entire planet. Nothing will be able to survive it, no plants, no animals, and no humans. Oh, there will be some who attempt to live underground, but they won't be able to survive the millions of years it takes for all the radiation to subside. And they'll probably already be so contaminated with radiation they'll end up with all sorts of cancers anyway.
I shouldn't go on about this, but I worry about my twin great-grand-sons who are only 5 years old and are going to have to put up with this. Not to mention my 9 grand-sons who are also going to have to go through this. I'll be 74 this month, have survived prostate cancer this past year thanks to radioactive seeds implanted in my prostate. I don't know how much longer I have on this old rock, but so far I'm cancer free and my PSA is down to 0.7. If I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to see the twins graduate high school. I've got one grand-son joining the Navy this year and his brother is in college in pre-med. Wants to be an orthopedic surgeon. The one joining the Navy has two years of college under his belt and plans to continue after he enlists so he can go to Officer Candidate School. The military has a college, The American Military College where he can finish his degree and the tuition is fairly inexpensive. I think it's $250 a credit hour. It's open to all military, retired military, and veterans. I don't know why I included this last paragraph, I guess to make the rest of it not sound so bad. Whatever.

I received this from my cousin who is a retired high school teacher. She taught sociology and government and was one of my teachers. I thought she made some good points here, so thought I would post it here.

I am going to express my opinion, because of my first amendment right.
After watching the State of the Union speech; these are my conclusions- regardless of whether you are red or blue.
The Democrats broke all of the rules of professionialism and humanity, last evening. Frankly, I think that clapping would be sufficient except for the personages of significance. But---------------
I. We are preaching to and at by all the entites: be kind to one another, do unto others (gosh no- that’s too religious) euphemism for that would be treat people with respect,
II.
Thus, I need to know what are the rules of respect. Please send me a list which includes-booing, smirky facial expressions, reading while another speaks, defiant actions, I will await with great anticipation for a learning experience.
III. Booing anyone is disrespectful and should not be tolerated. No school system is permitted to allow this kind of action. A teacher would be fired if they allowed negative words/actions to be uttered/shown in the school. Yet, these 'adults' thought it the proper actions. We hear that the president should be a model of a citizen. Well, the president is the reflection of those who elected him, not the other way around. I am not a follower of all the actions of any president, but I am respectful as I would like for those in my circle of peers, others to show me respect. Be tolerant and listen. You don’t have to agree, which is our right in America.
IV. Not standing for some of the improvements is along the line of “childish behavior”, elementary school play ground. I did not get my way thus, I will not play with you or I am going to tell the teacher-Pelosi. Adults should “stop drinking milk and eat meat”. Scriptural.
V. Wearing white to signify the “Me too Movement” but APPROVE OF KILLING FEMALE CHILDREN. How idiotic, felonious, and murderous is that? Some would say –animalistic –WELL- female animals rarely kill their young, they nurture them. That is cruel and unusual punishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How selfish and egotistical is it of a female to ask to choose for herself whether to kill her child because she doesn’t want this conceived specimen-(not her life-thus don’t criticize me on that statement) Yet, those same persons are opposed to the death penalty-how is that for ignorance/hypocrisy? Another word which is forbidden in our society is “stupid”. Lets try to use that word on the ‘murdering persons”, a no, no.
a. We are not to eat meat because that is murder. What is killing a human being----a day at the spa/ a chat on facebook.
b. We are to save every dog, cat, pet on this earth with multimillions of dollars, but WE choose to kill babies who are defenseless, likewise.
c. If a woman doesn’t want a child, she should have thought before she leaped into a sexual relationship).
VI. If you do not agree with me, then “defriend me” but remember your philosophy of tolerance.
VII. Everyone of us Christians, should write or call our state representatives and counter this trend of ‘killing children’ in our state. Go on the internet and find your reps and write them. The “squeaky wheel” gets the grease. We Christians have too long said–“I don’t wish to get involved”. You can find the addresses of those reps in DC on the internet.
VIII. Lastly, where is the ACLU? Not defending these helpless creations. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it.

I don't blame him. My wife had two hernia surgeries and was assured by her doctor that he would NOT be using the recalled mesh for her repairs. Two and a half years later she had to go through both surgeries again to have the recalled mesh removed and the hernias repaired properly. She then joined the class-action lawsuit and got a nice chunk of change from it. Sorry, non-disclosure agreement prevents me from saying how much she got. I have a navel hernia that I really should get repaired and I'm thinking about going to Ontario to have it done now. I'm glad I read about that specalized hospital.

Very good post, I think everything is going to happen just as you've predicted. Any ideas on what might have been in the envelopes at GHWB's funeral? I saw a YouTube video that said it might have been indictments, but I find that hard to believe as those were pretty small envelopes. Why didn't the 'same sex' couple go to someone in the LGBTQ community who does wedding invitations? I'll tell you why, it's the same as it was with the bakers in Seattle and Denver. They seek out Christian companies knowing full well they will be turned down and then can take them to court. It's all about the LGBTQ agenda and forcing that agenda on everyone else.
