I was raised in one of those western "Socialist" countries the political right is so fond of disparaging so the idea that I don't know anything about socialized
medicine is not correct. I lived in the UK and Europe for a time plus Australia and New Zealand, all of which have some form of socialized medical.
Picking up on an interview with a disgruntled Brit about their medical system is basically worthless. All societies have their share of complainers and the brits are no exception. Walk into any english pub and you can listen to someone deliver a litany of complaints about the National Health system, but ask them if they would like to exchange it for the american system and you will get a look of horror. Having lived in these countries and looked at their quality of life
you get a sense of sadness that americans are basically miserable about everything including their government, their healthcare and their society in general.I don't think Obamacare is or will be the answer but it has, whether we like it or not opened up the discussion about how well off as a nation we are not. And worst of all it demonstrates the utter lack of regard we have for our neighbors, our fellow villagers, our fellow Americans.

I agree with some of your comments but why this need to divide people into such strict chequerboard squares. It may be emotionally satisfying to divide the world into the good guys and the bad guys but we live now in an incredibly complex world, technologically, socially and politically. I find myself in agreement with different issues from all political sides at different times and so do many of my pragmatic contemporaries in the independent middle. Does that place us on either the black squares or the white or is there room for some nuance in all this?

Nothing wrong with a system that leaves 40 million americans uninsured who are a drain on the public purse? Because they DO get health care...from the emergency room. It's called indigent care. If they cannot pay then you and I pay through local and state taxes. Some sort of system that pulls everybody into a PAYING pool will begin to address this. NO FREE RIDES. Just a system where everybody pays according to their circumstances would begin to alleviate the skyrocketing costs of healthcare. The Insurance companies are part of the problem because they are allowed to jack prices in a lot of states without restraint. The only thing that will rein them in is fair regulation and FAIR COMPETITION in the form of a public option.

No. Medical schools in the US are horrendously expensive compared to the rest of the developed world. Some like Johns Hopkins are justifiably famous for their expertise. Many med students (who can afford it) come to America for one simple reason : MONEY
In their own country doctors can usually make a comfortable income but nothing like the fabulous fees they can make as a specialist working in America with it's bloated profit driven medical system. Once you graduate med school in America it is relatively easy to get residency here. I would note here that many american doctors get their training in 3rd world countries because it is more affordable then return to the US with a newly minted Medical Degree and only have to get a passing grade on the Medical boards exam in one of the more regulation lax southern states to merge into the US medical mainstream.

And you have lived in the UK and personally experienced this? One of the biggest fallacies in american thinking is that countries with a more socialized medical system are constrained to use ONLY that system. False. In almost all those countries (in fact none do not have this option that I am aware of) you can go to a private hospital and pay for the procedure. Since there is a single payer type system in place (cumbersome and sometimes inefficient though that may be) this serves to keep costs of private insurers in check for the most part because they are mindful of the fact that some people will opt for the less expensive option even if a wait is sometimes involved. Usually private health insurance can be had in these countries cheaper that America.
I realize that this nuance may not fit your rhetorical narrative but a little attention to the facts would be nice.
