I can thank my mother. She was a journalist and DEMANDED proper English, both in our writing and in our speech.

Good for her and good for you! You paid attention to your mother.

Looking through 82 year old eyes, I read several blogs and respond to a few.
I have wondered for ages what has caused the changes that I see. Generally speaking, don't people care any more? I am well aware that it isn't the end of the world but the spelling and sentence structure are atrocious.
Quickly, let me say, I am not the grammar monitor on here or anywhere else but stick this out there merely looking for input from others.
My very unprofessional opinion is an increase in visual projections like TV and movies and a decrease in reading and letter writing as communication tools.
Lost is the ability to spot spelling errors instantly. Learning the 8 parts of speech and the ability to parse verbs are lost arts. A friend told me those items aren't even taught in school any more. They were a large part of the school learning process when I attended. Attitude and the expectations of parents, students and teachers were very important as well. I was sent to school to learn and there was no discussion, and no excuses. It was the way it was. Report cards were issued and dealt with. We would take great pride in not missing a day of school for the whole school year. Band, sports and other outside activities did not cut into class room time.
Similar to calculators and computers sort of negate the need for multiplication tables and how to lay out a math problem for solving. What percentage of people do you guess could subtract one date from another, for instance.

What does anyone else see as a detriment to learning?

The answer? There isn't one for us but maybe we would expect something better for the grand and great grand children

I did also. If you pay attention, the misuse of grammar here is atrocious. There for Their, hear for here, Me instead of I and vise versus, to instead of too. I'm not sure if it is lack of knowledge or, as in my case, typing too fast. What ever, as long as we can understand what is being said, who cares? Mike

You Sir got a so much better education than I. I graduated high school in 1968. Our education was hundreds of times better than those today receive but the one you, my mother and dad got was so much better than mine. You learned real history, math and all aspects of English. By my time we still learned math, had voc. classes, but history and English were beginning to be distorted. Not like they are today but the nose was under the tent. God bless you and yours. Mike I won't argue with you on anything.

I had several great English teachers and one was my Mother. She taught English and Latin at college and later in public school. I wish I could remember half of what I was taught and have known. The mind IS a terrible thing to lose. Mike

The "Dumbing down" of America has been intentional and it's working. By making everyone equally stupid leaves room for more rule and tyranny. Therein lies the problem.
