I can't even imagine anyone choosing public assistance as a career, but if I were able to imagine it, I would be strongly against it. I would also be asking how prevalent choosing public assistance as a career is and what we can do about it.

I would not despise anyone for accepting public assistance, at least until I was able to understand his situation.......empathize with him.

I worked with a young (about 25) black girl whose mother had raised her in the welfare system all their lives. She was without doubt the laziest person I knew. We could hardly keep her at her desk, she was out socializing. She had a collection of excuses for not coming to work, much more than car trouble, sleeping late, family sickness, you name it. She knew how to work any system and con anybody she could. For a long time, it actually turned me against black people.

I find it very difficult to understand how it would be even possible to turn you or anyone against an entire race of people because you observed one behaving inappropriately. I am reasonably sure you didn't mean that.

No I absolutely meant it. I knew good and well that there were lots of really great blacks all around me. I never lost sight of that. I just had to work through my resentment of all her cons and scams.

Why do some people obsess about those who receive public assistance? Why do they seem to fixate their loathing on those less well off than themselves? I think the following quotes provides us a clue although we may be unable to see that it all relates to us:

Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity, nothing exceeds the criticism of the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well warmed, and well-fed." Herman Melville

People seem to enjoy things more when they know a lot of other people have been left out of the pleasure. Russell Baker

Happiness is an agreeable sensation arising from contemplating the misery of others. Ambrose Bierce

It is not enough to succeed, Others must fail. Gore Vidal

When does a hunchback rejoice? When he sees one with a larger hump. Yiddish saying

Note:
If you are asking yourself if the messages in this apply to you, they probably don’t.
Why do some people obsess about those who receive ... (show quote)

It seems to me all of the quotes come from the people that really need the help.

Most normal people do not object or otherwise degrade folks having a difficult time.

What bothers people are those who make little or no effort to advance themselves in our society and make welfare a life style, playing the system and remain takers instead of contributors.

Glaucon - I can imagine it...I have 3rd generation cousins that "public assistance" is their vocation of choice... illegitimate kids having illegitimate kids having illegitimate kids...and collecting all the government "freebies". And they hate me because I won't vote for politicians who don't mind making it easy for them. Yeah, they are life long democrats.

You meant that the bad experience with one black person caused you to be against all black people? Is that what you said or was I mistaken?

They are both "life long Democrats" AND black. If that doesn't bring out the bigotry against ALL who receive public assistance and ALL blacks, I don't know what would. A twofer.

I think any free riders on public assistance should have severe penalties.

What are all the government freebies you imagine those on public assistance are receiving and what would motivate anyone to live like they really do ? When you say, "they hate me," who are you talking about?

If you were a giant corporation receiving billions in free stuff from our government you would be a Republican. Do you vote for politicians who make it easy for some corporations to not pay any taxes at all ...?

The whole Honest Abe thing? He just had others do his dirty work.

The sexcapades of so many presidents.
Well, you know, I am sure.
I wouldn't claim, however, that we get nothing for our tax dollars; not enough but not nothing.

You don't make sense with your comment. Your statement has no relevance to what I said. You are pulling at straws and talking through your head!

What are you trying to say. Does anyone talk through anything but their head? Be specific. Your complaint are based on what information, sources, evidence?

Your mindless rage is noted. I have no idea what the "ignorant liberal doctrine" is. Clue me in.
