Why do some people obsess about those who receive public assistance? Why do they seem to fixate their loathing on those less well off than themselves? I think the following quotes provides us a clue although we may be unable to see that it all relates to us:
Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity, nothing exceeds the criticism of the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well warmed, and well-fed." Herman Melville
People seem to enjoy things more when they know a lot of other people have been left out of the pleasure. Russell Baker
Happiness is an agreeable sensation arising from contemplating the misery of others. Ambrose Bierce
It is not enough to succeed, Others must fail. Gore Vidal
When does a hunchback rejoice? When he sees one with a larger hump. Yiddish saying

Most normal people do not object or otherwise degrade folks having a difficult time.
What bothers people are those who make little or no effort to advance themselves in our society and make welfare a life style, playing the system and remain takers instead of contributors.

Excellent point and right on target.

That would bother me, also.

Some people seem to be most concerned about people who are in serious need and some seem most concerned with those who might be getting something we don't think they deserve. Fortunately for all of us, most of us are somewhere between these two positions.

Hell, public assistance can't be all bad, Snoopy, one or two can actually be on-the-dole their entire life, grow-up, go to Harvard and be "selected" [Louis Farrakhan] to be POTUS. Talk about the "American? dream." Hummmmmmmmmm.

In some states, you can make more than working a full time job. Am I the only one who sees a problem?

Are you joking or do you actually believe that?

Some states have insisted that those that are healthy and able bodied must put in so many hours a week in public service in orfer to collect their welfare checks. In those states the welfare role went way down as those that were on welfare either went out and got a job or else moved to a different state.

Right on brother. I have no problem with people who actually need assistance getting it. What bothers me more than anything about the system is these women with 4 or 5 kids if not more and all by different men, milking the system for what it's worth. To me, that is just a load of BS.

I have heard that story many times.

Are there a lot of women with 4 0r 5 kids by different fathers? How much milk would she get in your county? Is there any way you could make sure the kids eat without letting the mother eat? The only way I know of the get rid of all the free loaders is to cut off help to everyone. Who decides which people "actually need assistance?"

Would you stake your life on the truth of this story?

It's a no win situation and will be what it is. I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you, but I do know of a couple of women with the scenario I described.
I am out of this thread.
