I guess I should get my two cents in here although I'm sure you will all laugh at me.

I rode English saddle and enjoyed it thoroughly. It sure made my legs stronger - all that posting.

I will admit that I saved my lunch money all week just to go riding on Saturday. The horses we rode were retired race horses and each was a distinct experience. Riding, even once a week, took me away from the cares of the world for that period.

I attended many horse shows - both rodeo (yes, they do have them back East!) and jumping. There was one competition I enjoyed that I've never seen since moving further West. That was called "pole bending." Sort of like slalom on a horse. I also enjoyed the training procedures.

I will say that the best riding I've ever seen was at the Mexican rodeo. I can still picture an entire line of girls, riding side-saddle (in gowns) and stopping on a dime. The horses just SAT!. Totally breathtaking.

Glad you chimed in! My daughter tried the English riding for a while. Hated it. She tried though.
As for the pole bending, Lol!! I still have the poles behind my barn!! We were members of a local riding club, where we did all kinds of silly things horseback! It was fun! And no horses were injured or abused. Some of the kids got their feelings hurt here and there. It was just all fun!!

 Noooo, anything but a plant!! I did say sorry.  Okay...I know you can still hear me laughing. Is my admission of riding English "once", ending up lumpy headed from apples after the horse was spooked, taking off with me on her back and leaving me dangling from her neck at the end, penance enough?

That sounds great. I'm sure you realize that there were no ranches in Brooklyn. I wish I had been able to ride more.

Did try a Western saddle and just couldn't pick up the movement of the horse (I guess that's what you're supposed to do). After being trained on a postage stamp, the Western just seemed cumberson. I understand its uses but it was not for me.

I do miss going to rodeos. Where I live there is only one advertised rodep per year and it seems like it's mostly for kids.

When I lived in Phoenix I had the opportunity to see the "Old Timers' Rodeo" before it went professional. Was also surprised that, at my first Western Rodeo, the fellow who won the bull riding contest was from Brooklyn. I didn't know whether to feel proud or disappointed. After all, I had come from NY to see a "REAL" rodeo! I wondered, "where in heck in Brooklyn did he ever decide to become a bull rider?" He was well known on the circuit.

As a kid, one of the members of our "gang" who was very small, had decided to become a jockey. I also don't know where he got the horse he brought into the neighborhood. Sadly, he then began growing. :-( :-( :-(

We had nothing, except mules to ride. I rode two mules on our farm. One was named Charlie and the other Tom. We had several over the years, but I remember these especially. Charlie, was a small mule and rode good. Dad had him for 26 years. He sold him once during this time, but went back and bought him back. I had six brothers born from 1926 to 1952. All of us rode old Charlie. Old Charlie had a mean streak in him. He would try to swing his head back and bite you on the leg sometimes. I would kick him in the side, when he tried this. One of my brothers even bit him on the neck. I was trucking tobacco with him one day and while sitting on the front of the tobacco truck my brother told him to gitup. When he moved, it snatch me back and my feet kick old Charlie in the butt. He tuck off running and I fell down beside the tobacco truck. My leg got caught in the rope and he drugged me over some tree roots and skin my a.. up a bit, but my brother grapped the lines up and stopped him. I was about 11 years old at the time.

Ouch!!!! Painful, that must have been. I discovered that Shetland Ponies aren't necessarily "nice" critters on a job site. My oldest was but 3 at the time and we were bringing lunch to "daddy" and some of the guys on the site. There were some horses and a Shetland that were allowed to roam at will. The Shetland was known for being cranky, but mostly with the horses, but this day went to snatch the lunch bags from my hand. I jerked them away, giving the Shetland a slap on the rump. It looked at me and then at my 3-year-old about twenty feet in front of me, and for a brief moment looked back at me and then took off right for my son, lowering his head, and flung my son to the ground, the ground being covered with gravel from the job site. My son's knees were much the worse for wear. Smart that animal was and in this case truly mean of spirit!!

Had he been mine that would have been his last hurrah for sure as he would have been on the short end of the life rope for striking my child. I don't put up with mean animals.

After my wife and I retired, we started a small electric company. We were wiring a barn, I must tell you horses are not my favorite aminals. I was bent down digging an opening to run wire under the foundation. If elt breath over my shoulder to the right then felt the same tom y left. There I was with two horses on each shoulder bending down closer and closer. I had to yell for my wife to come run them off.

Horsess eem to like to bite me. I can't say I hate them but we aren ot on the best of terms. :hunf: :hunf: :hunf: :hunf:
