My horse, actually my grandfathers, decided not to jump a fence. He stopped so suddenly, he lost his balance and fell...on me. Fortunately neither of us were badly injured. He would never allow me to ride him again. I think he had more 'smart's' than I.

Loved the video Arch.

I thought so!! If you haven't ever felt the power, and strength of a horse underneath you, when you are both working together...well, you have missed a great experience!!

Doesn't it hurt the horse to ride a dirt bike on it?

They have to have the right disposition, and be well trained. Then they don't mind so much!!

I have some cousins with a big cattle ranch. I learned how to ride on an old horse named Sam. One of my cousins is named after the horse. As I got older I got involved in roundups and I learned what the the big floppy hat and the pointy toed boots were for. I have been in brush you could not see thru and if the horse saw a cow you better hang on. We would take 3 horses each with us for a days work. We use Hackmores instead of bits. One horse that I always rode was Ringo. Smarter than me by a long shot. He once slipped out of his Hackmore while I was leading him across a rock patch and I did not know it. I walked a good distance dragging the reins.

A good cow horse who knows their job is hard to ride if you don't know the job as well as the horse!! They are pretty danged good at what they do!
I was thinking about this today, and out of all of em we have been blessed with; who was the best?? I will admit that some of them were NOT blessings! They didn't stay long.
Anyway, I have decided on ol Patches. She was probably the ugliest horse ever born; but she was all heart!! She was an appaloosa pony about 13 hands. No mane to speak of. About 14" of tail. Oh, black and white. Body, and feet like a mule. Blind in one eye. A head as big as a clydesdale. She was REALLY hard to look at!! I'll tell you what though, that ol gal would go anywhere she was pointed, or do anything those kids asked of her. She was absolutely bomb proof!!
On top of that, she was blind in her right eye. She hauled a lot of kids in a lot of different situations during the 10 years we had with her!! The vet figured she was around 33-35 when she had to be put down. Good memories!!

I guess I should get my two cents in here although I'm sure you will all laugh at me.

I rode English saddle and enjoyed it thoroughly. It sure made my legs stronger - all that posting.

I will admit that I saved my lunch money all week just to go riding on Saturday. The horses we rode were retired race horses and each was a distinct experience. Riding, even once a week, took me away from the cares of the world for that period.

I attended many horse shows - both rodeo (yes, they do have them back East!) and jumping. There was one competition I enjoyed that I've never seen since moving further West. That was called "pole bending." Sort of like slalom on a horse. I also enjoyed the training procedures.

I will say that the best riding I've ever seen was at the Mexican rodeo. I can still picture an entire line of girls, riding side-saddle (in gowns) and stopping on a dime. The horses just SAT!. Totally breathtaking.

Well, you won't find "me" laughing, that's for sure!! I admire you. I did a little bareback riding as a child in the hills of KY and "experimented" with riding as an adult. However, you definitely would have laughed 'til your sides ached if they had made a video of my one and only English riding experience!! Totally green, nothing to protect my head, and two hunting dogs spooked my horse. Ran me through an apple orchard. End result, a sore head and the pic of me that would have resulted...clinging to the horse's neck, legs wrapped tightly around her neck, trying really hard to not hit the ground. They said I looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I don't doubt it!!
