Sorry to say, many of us have experienced that.
Live and hopefully learn.

I’ve known Russians and Asians that eat carp. They’re considered a great sport fish by many. I’ve caught a few and can attest to the fact that they put up one heck of a good fight.

People at the quarry bow-fished them...true, they "resisted arrest".

I live by a river here in Illinois and quite a number of years ago they were working on the damn and stopped the flow of the river. There were pools of water and they had all of these carp swimming around in them and those black kids were scooping them up and taking them home. I guess that they smoke them and they are supposed to be pretty good eating after they are smoked sort of like smoked chubs I guess. Don't know because I have never tried the carp but I have eaten the smoked chubs and they are delicious with crackers and cheese.

I've had Carp, Chinese style and smoked. Carp is the example of why people hate fish.
Better than starvation, but only if it comes down to it.

You are what you eat.
As the saying goes.

My kids used to catch them in our city lake, but they tossed them back.
We didn't eat them or anyone we knew ate them.
I've heard they eat them in certain countries.

If Carp were good to eat, you'd buy it right alongside grouper and salmon.
But it's not good, so you don't see it in the market.

Carp are great if prepared right. The biggest problem is they are so full of bones. If you cut the dark red "MUD" streak out you can fry them, bake them, smoke them. Carp and Buffalo and Suckers are all in the same family. They are all delicious if cooked right. Another good eating fish is Dogfish if cooked and eaten almost as soon as caught.
