What is being called"The Confederate Flag" is not the flag of the Confederacy but The Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia which was led by Gen. R.E. Lee. The symbol on it is St. Andrew's Cross. The flag of the Confederacy 1861 to 1863 had a circle of white stars on a blue background representing the Southern States involved in the Confederacy and red and white stripes on the field. It had the colors and similar style of the American flag but was distinctly different. Mike

Question of the Day
Posted by Keith Broaders on August 13, 2017

Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned a large number of slaves and if we take down the statue of Robert E. Lee should we also also remove the faces of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson from Mount Rushmore?

Many Americans are offended by the Confederate flag because they associate the Confederate flag with slavery while at the same time they revere the flag of the United States which represented a country that promoted slavery for over 200 years.

Did you know that Robert E. Lee voluntarily freed his slaves years before Ulysses S. Grant was compelled to free his slaves?

U.S. Grant had several slaves who were only freed after the 13th amendment in December of 1865. When asked why he did not free his slave earlier, Grant stated the "Good help is so hard to come by these days."[/quote]

You are depressing me. I want to be a good American by burning bills with slave holders on them. Burning a one dollar bill with Washington on is no big deal. Burning a 2 dollar Jefferson bill, I can even do that. However, burning a 50 dollar US Grant bill is serious. I can't even bring myself to do an Andy Jackson $20.

No need to burn any of them. They will be worthless anyway. And Sicilian is right on the money...all the way! I'll remind you all, to do away with history would do away with any history of slavery. Bottom line! No more racism. The blacks have nothing left to whine about. Many of them came here freely and were not born here as the descendants of slaves, anyway.

That was not the Confederate Battle Flag they were flying, it was RELee's flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. Ignorance can be very daunting, not to say misleading.

Sicilian,

Wasting your time if you try to demonstrate historical facts to America's young people and others-especially people of the Black persucasion. They believe what they want to believe or told how to believe by their so called leaders. I have Southern Heritage and I don't want any group tearing down or removing statues that I find interesting and reminds me of the history behind it. I would not advocate removing statues that remind any other group of their heritage. They, Confederate Statues, should be no more offensive to Black People and vice versa. For Heaven's Sake, it is just a piece of marble, bronze or whatever. It is not worth getting hurt over.

Communists can be imperfect and they are excused. The scumbags who put Obama into the WhiteHouse go back into history and find the flaws in order to destroy America. You have to judge people by what was going on in their own time. I am sure before I die the scumbags will find a way to get Obama onto currency. Hopefully with governmental efficiency and going along with the Character of the person in question some bureaucrat will find a way to screw it up. I remember the Susan B. Anthony dollar. They screwed it up and nobody liked them because you could confuse them with a quarter.

Maybe they could bring the guy who spearheaded the Suzy out of retirement or dig him up when the Obama currency comes up and put him in charge. Now what denomination would honor our first Black President?

$4? After all...I still have my $3 Clinton bills! Has anyone else saved them? Someday, they may even be worth $3 to collectors. Otherwise, I suppose they're nothing more than a novelty item.

I can see why Republicans reverence the Confederate flag or the Army of Virginia flag whatever;. a poll showed that 25% of Republicans think the Emancipation Proclamation was a mistake. Truthfully we should all be thankful to the hundreds of thousands of black soldiers in the Union Army that were instrumental in defeating the rebels.

But lee fought on the side of slavery and led the south in an insurrection that cost the lives of over 600,000 American boys

I do I've seen it for quite some time When the hate radio screamers began to become popular it soon became clear that the nation would become increasingly polarized and it is such a polarization that le to the war between the states. It's beginning to look like its going to be fought all over again and liberals will be decimated the crazies have the military the guns and the militancy. My own family has become polarized. I have cousins in the heart land who won't speak to me that think I'm of the devil

The problem is what they represent and African Americans continue to be second or third class citizens segregation in our public schools is as segregated as before the 1953 Brown vs Board of Education ruling by the SCOTUS unemployment among young blacks is 50 % It's no wonder so many wind up in prison
