Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned a large number of slaves and if we take down the statue of Robert E. Lee should we also also remove the faces of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson from Mount Rushmore?

Many Americans are offended by the Confederate flag because they associate the Confederate flag with slavery while at the same time they revere the flag of the United States which represented a country that promoted slavery for over 200 years.

Did you know that Robert E. Lee voluntarily freed his slaves years before Ulysses S. Grant was compelled to free his slaves?

U.S. Grant had several slaves who were only freed after the 13th amendment in December of 1865. When asked why he did not free his slave earlier, Grant stated the "Good help is so hard to come by these days."

You are depressing me. I want to be a good American by burning bills with slave holders on them. Burning a one dollar bill with Washington on is no big deal. Burning a 2 dollar Jefferson bill, I can even do that. However, burning a 50 dollar US Grant bill is serious. I can't even bring myself to do an Andy Jackson $20.

I told my wife just today that the history I was taught as a child was mostly bullshit, because there were no warts in it. The truth ALWAYS has warts - because humans are involved and humans make mistakes, screw up, are often nasty, dishonest and cruel. It is the fact that we succeeded in creating something remarkable DESPITE our human foibles, that makes a compelling case for our way of life.

We must learn from the past, not hide from it, apologize for it, or seek to re-create it, but should instead seek a better future, utilizing what we've learned from our mistakes. We are not destined to repeat the past - but we often attempt to do so.

Communists can be imperfect and they are excused. The scumbags who put Obama into the WhiteHouse go back into history and find the flaws in order to destroy America. You have to judge people by what was going on in their own time. I am sure before I die the scumbags will find a way to get Obama onto currency. Hopefully with governmental efficiency and going along with the Character of the person in question some bureaucrat will find a way to screw it up. I remember the Susan B. Anthony dollar. They screwed it up and nobody liked them because you could confuse them with a quarter.

Maybe they could bring the guy who spearheaded the Suzy out of retirement or dig him up when the Obama currency comes up and put him in charge. Now what denomination would honor our first Black President?

These flare ups are becoming more frequent because of actions like the Statues etc..
I dont think the Officials understand what kind of long term mistakes they are making.
