Somehow socialism has gotten a bad name. You used the word society, which eludes to a mass of people acting as a unit. Is it socialism to pay taxes to fund the military that is supposed to protect us, or police, supposedly to keep our streets safe. Is you local library socialism? There are many facets of society that are socialistic. Socialism isn't the problem, corruption is.
Welfare programs to help those in need are an ethical, valuable asset to a society. Welfare to the billionaires, as in subsidies to oil companies, are not ethical, and the other side of that coin, billionaires funding politics, is corruption.
As much as I don't like paying taxes, I am all right with helping my fellow man in need, but I am not alright with funding corruption.

That would be the ideal. Unfortunately the churches and non-profits fall short, so government picks up the slack, and adds its corruption with it.

Democrats are just as guilty as the GOP when it comes to not wanting to raise taxes on the rich. The DNC doesn't want to raise their own taxes.
Democrats also are responsible for bankrupting the Social Security SAVINGS plan. Because during the 60s and 70s the Democratic congress/senate kept pulling money out of the program in order to spend on silly pork barrel projects.

There are some that get trapped in the system, but I have know many that needed help getting through a tough time and didn't get trapped. There was a time many years ago that food stamps helped me through a tough time, and unemployment helped too. Even Paul Ryan admits to his family getting aid temporarily.
Just because the system, isn't prefect doesn't mean we should let people go hungry.
