No one has ever suggested that the Court "redefine" marriage. The Supreme Court's purview is to say what state and federal governments may do or not do with respect to relationships between people. The Court can certainly conclude that the governments of California and the United States have no power to give special treatment to one form of relationship over all others unless it can show that doing so is based on a "fundamental interest" of the nation. This the government cannot possibly do.
