We should put an end to all "relief" programs like food stamp, etc., and replace it by forcing the unemployed into either a closely-watched disability program or an ELR program, explained as follows:

Congress would create an Employer of Last Resort (ELR) program which would pay any otherwise unemployed person a fixed hourly wage (say $10) with full fringe benefits (Social Security, health insurance, 401 (k), etc.) for a 40-hour week. This person would then be available to work for any federal, state, or local government or for a qualified NGO office at no cost to that office. The employee could also be trained for the desired work as part of the program.

The result would effectively end unemployment, establish a minimum wage, return dignity to the lives of millions, end the fear of unemployment, lower crime and drug use as well as the "War on Poverty", and ameliorate family stability, single motherhood, prison expense, insurance premiums, etc., etc., etc.

To answer your next question, we are already paying for it.

Heck, people don't give this much thought, but even nuclear power plants produce CO2, whenever you boil water, CO2 escapes, or is distilled off.

Where does the carbon come from when boiling water?

Water is H2O. Boiling water turns to steam which is H2O in its gaseous state. In order to create CO2, carbon must be present.

It is actually the same issue with Nickolai's calcium carbonate which because CO2 ionizes in water and calcium readily bonds with carbon and oxygen to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3) limestone. The only reason for a ph shift due to greater amounts of ionized carbon and oxygen in seawater would be a lack of calcium in that water.

Thank you, for the information.

But I hardly perceive its relevance. I prefer honest men to men who agree with me. If a man doesn't believe in God, why should he ask for God's help?
As long as saying, "So help me God." is not disallowed, I see no problem

Augustus - Thanks for at least making an effort with logic and without slinging invective. Whether or not military personnel are the right players, I disagree on the number. I don't see how 475 specialists can build multiple hospitals, repair infrastructure and control chaos in the short amount of time that is needed. But I'm comfortable that we can disagree on that.

As to the Bible quotes I see your analysis as self-serving. It seems clear to me that Christ's words, as always, are simple and straightforward and can be applied in this case. Although I do not consider myself a Christian, Jesus seems to be always clear: take care of each other, and especially the downtrodden. And especially those different than yourself.

As to the Bible quote, Jesus is quite straight forward, as you point out, if you read the parable in its entirety and context the point is caring for the downtrodden in person, and not by proxy.

To build multiple hospitals, repair infrastructure and control chaos in the short amount of time that is needed, cannot be done with 3000 and probably not a hundred times that number. But 3000 soldiers would be able to create a lethal quarantine perimeter for the 174 million people of Lagos, Nigeria.

This strain of Ebola has wiped out in less than a week entire villages in Nigeria. I suspect the purpose of such a small number of soldiers is something of this type of endeavor. I don't like it, it may even be essential, but I doubt it is for humanitarian interests of the infected population or those within the quarantine.

I think many are missing the point of utilizing the military. They are the ones trained in rapid deployment of needed infrastructure, and there's the added benefit of helping to provide stability amid the chaos. Since it is impossible to 100% seal our borders (even if that were a good thing to do) this action helps protect us here in the U.S. Yes, other major powers should be helping, but we need to do what's necessary to protect ourselves and help those in need.

As I noted in a separate post:

I'm wondering what the conservatives on OPP would have our country do about Ebola. Anything? Seems to me too often people are complaining about our president's lack of leadership and then, when he leads, reject it out of hand with no recommendation for doing anything differently.

And since many here are conservative Christians, I'd like to add a few Biblical quotes for pondering:

Matthew 25: 39-41
…39'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40"The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' 41"Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;…

Proverbs 14:31
Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

If it was for "rapid deployment of needed infrastructure," then 475 specialists, not 3000 armed troops would be of much greater value.

The problem of securing our borders from Ebola is that it is a known v***s symptoms develop within ten to fourteen days, only air traffic can bring someone from these portions of Africa to the USA in that time period. The major cause of the spread of Ebola is unsanitary living conditions. While a lethal disease, it spreads slowly through poor hygiene and interaction with unsanitized infected environments.

The quoting of the Bible in ignorance is not a practice of religion. The parable in Matthew is about individuals on Judgment Day, not nations. Putting other people's lives in jeopardy in no way fulfills visiting the sick or imprisoned, clothing the naked, or feeding the hungry.

When you defend the sending of others to visit the contagious sick, you are not loving the person you are sending. If you think you should visit them, go; but don't defend the forced visitation of the sick by others.

Sending troop to help out.. would you rather send private con tracers? That has worked well for us, has it not...
The Military has been involved in humanity issues 100s of times. What do you picture them doing, shooting all the sick? Or maybe the health workers... They will help supply and build a workable hospital and environment so the health workers can get the job done..

The border, very uninformed group posting about that... The border patrol currently has the largest staff and budget ever.. Bush added a great deal and Obama even more..

reread what Marvin posted and pay attention this time..

The last outbreak of Measles that I heard of, someone went on vacation and brought it home with him. He was not v******ted and his social group was not either. Think that was in new york..But health people isolated and stopped it.. Good guys fixed it.

Africa is the place to stop Ebola and if we need to spend money, this is a time and place to do it...

Labor Board Orders CNN to Rehire 100 Fired Employees

The Labor Board found “overwhelming” evidence of anti-union animus in CNN’s failure to bargain with the union about the decision to terminate the subcontracts. The org also found CNN had implemented a hiring plan designed to limit the number of discharged TVS employees to avoid a successorship bargaining obligation.

The problem is the Constitution does not enumerate the freedoms of the people, but the powers of the government.

In order to challenge your "stitch-work" biblically, someone would need to comprehend it logically. And you have not proven that you do that. Let alone anyone else.

Have you ever read Ernie Pyle's war correspondence?

He has a slant. Any good journalist has a slant, a bias. I prefer pro-American slants. If I h**e my country, I should go live in a country that I love. I don't watch news very much at all.

FOX is not, and never has been, slanted pro-war in the way all our news correspondents during the World Wars were. It is good to be aware of slant, but rather than assume that some people slant and some people don't slant the information, it is better to consider all information provided to us is slanted. And part of being an informed individual is recognizing the slant of all information providers.

Have you watched CNN, lately? They've changed their slant on the disturbances in the Middle East significantly since August. There are reasons for this change, I was wondering if you had noticed?

Remember: It's not what we report, but how we report it. One thing to note in journalism of the World Wars is the adjectives. American forces, Ally forces become "our" forces; and the reverse German forces, Axis forces become "enemy" forces. FOX does not report "our" forces in the Middle East, nor does it report ISIS as "enemy" forces. Can you imagine the effect that such a change of wording would invoke in the viewing audience?
