If you didn’t know that Shakespeare was an old dead white devil, now you do, thanks to this whack teacher.

The Washington Post has published a guest article by a California teacher arguing that American high school students shouldn’t read Shakespeare because he’s a dead, white man.

Dana Dusbiber, who teaches English in Sacramento, says she avoids Hamlet and all the rest because her minority students shouldn’t be expected to study a “a long-dead, British guy” (Dusbiber herself is white). And while Shakespeare is widely regarded as the premier writer of the English language, able to timelessly portray themes central to the human experience, Dusbiber says he only is regarded that way because “some white people” ordained it and he can easily be replaced.

“Why not teach the oral tradition out of Africa, which includes an equally relevant commentary on human behavior?” She suggests. “Why not teach t***slations of early writings or oral storytelling from Latin America or Southeast Asia other parts of the world? Many, many of our students come from these languages and traditions … perhaps we no longer have the time to study the Western canon that so many of us know and hold dear.”

To bolster her case for dumping the Bard, Dusbiber says that minority students, like those who dominate her own classroom, deserve to study their own cultures rather than being exposed to “Eurocentrism.” But at the same time, she takes the exact opposite position for w****s, saying school should be a place for them to explore cultures other than their own.

“If we only teach white students, it is our imperative duty to open them up to a world of diversity through literature that they may never encounter anywhere else in their lives,” she says. “I admit that this proposal, that we leave Shakespeare out of the English curriculum entirely, will offend many.”

Despite holding an English degree and describing herself as voracious reader, Dusbiber’s desire to purge the dusty old Bard from her classroom is partly based on her own difficulties reading him. She confesses that she has a “personal disinterest in reading stories written in an early form of the English language that I cannot always easily navigate.”

While Post education reporter Valerie Strauss, who published the article, notes that Dusbiber’s view “is shared by a lot of people in and out of education,” the piece has stirred a fiery and mostly hostile response, and later on Saturday Strauss published a rebuttal from another English teacher, who argues that it’s absurd to throw Shakespeare into the trash simply because he’s very dead and very white.

“Ethnically diverse students don’t foolishly fall in love … ?” The rebuttal asks rhetorically. “Or feel jealousy or rage? Or fall victim to discrimination? Or act desperately out of passion? To dismiss Shakespeare on the grounds that life 450 years ago has no relation to life today is to dismiss every religious text, every piece of ancient mythology (Greek, African, Native American, etc.), and for that matter, everything that wasn’t written in wh**ever time defined as ‘NOW.'”

A Texas police officer was filmed pushing a 14-year-old girl in a swimsuit to the ground and pointing his gun at other teens.

By Matt Pearcecontact the reporter

The Texas police officer who drew his gun on unarmed teenagers at a pool party and threw a 14-year-old girl in a bikini to the ground has resigned, officials said Tuesday..

Cpl. Eric Casebolt had been suspended since Sunday after video emerged of him aggressively confronting black teenagers at the party Friday evening in McKinney, a suburb of Dallas.

City officials condemned his actions as they announced the resignation.

“Our policy, our training, our practices do not support these actions,” McKinney Police Chief Greg Conley told reporters at a televised news conference, calling Casebolt’s actions “indefensible.”

“He came to the call out of control,” Conley said. “I had 12 officers on the scene, and 11 of them performed according to their training.”

A bystander’s video, which garnered millions of views on YouTube, showed Casebolt shouting and cursing at teenagers who did not appear to be acting violently or aggressively, with Casebolt wrestling some black teenagers to the ground.

Officials said residents had called the police to complain about an out-of-control party and fighting. Some teenagers said they had permission to be at the pool and said residents had harassed them.

The incident prompted a protest Monday as police promised to investigate Casebolt’s actions.

With Casebolt's resignation, the internal investigation comes to an end, Conley said, and Casebolt will keep his pension and benefits. The chief added that a criminal investigation was ongoing and would take “a matter of time to work through.”

Mayor Brian Loughmiller told reporters that he was keeping close tabs on the situation and had met with local community leaders to discuss their concerns.

“We all have to learn from what occurred,” said Loughmiller.

Jane Bishkin, a Dallas attorney who represents Casebolt and several police unions, told the Los Angeles Times in a text message that there would be a statement about Casebolt’s resignation 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The episode has tapped into the ongoing national furor over how police handle black community members. This one was unusual in that no one involved appeared to have been seriously hurt.

Even so, the video proved to be evocative enough to draw public condemnation and, for some critics, summon memories of the nation’s segregation years, when African Americans were denied the right to swim in pools with w***e A******ns.

But the McKinney Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represented Casebolt, said Monday that “this was not a racially motivated incident” and said McKinney police do not conduct “racially biased policing.”

One policing expert, David Bradford, executive director of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, told The Times that “in this particular case, the officer may have been overzealous in taking an enforcement role rather than a peacekeeper role.”

“Just based on what I’ve seen in the video … if this was my department and that was my officer, we would definitely be doing some remedial training and some reorientation with regard to what our role is and what our job is in the community,” Bradford said. He nonetheless cautioned that he would still want to know more about what happened before he reached a definitive conclusion about Casebolt’s actions.

In a situation in which officers are facing large crowds and trying to restore the peace, Bradford said, “you would want to take calming actions to calm the party down and disperse the participants in a lawful manner.”

KHH1, oh what a tangled web... The info in the " media" and the t***h are at different spectrums of the t***h meter. Just so happens my son and daughter in law were there that fateful day. The t***h? Ok the neighborhood kids,( teens actually), threw a pool party and the neighborhood in which they live is somewhat nice. Enter the wannabes and all around stupid acting b****s,( that's the ones called n****rs), who jumped the privacy fence around the pool acted like the character actors in a '30's Tarzan movie and scared the s**t out of many children that was present. My son his wife and my 2 year old grandson were on the way to get sodas and chips for the BBQ they were having when the first cop was seen entering the neighborhood. Thinking it odd they turned around to head back to the home of their friends who where entertaining them for the day. That's when they witnessed the officer trying to control the crowd and keep peace until help arrived. The uninvited thugs were cussing and threatening the first officer on the scene,( gee, wonder where they learned such behavior)? The "child" who was thrown to the ground was told 3, yes 3 times to disperse. In other words get the fuck gone you bigmouth little jinxs. Bottom line, the black families who live in the neighborhood support the officers actions. Why do you think those black families worked hard, studied and worked hard some more? To get the hell away from the very pieces of s**t that came uninvited to a neighborhood pool party with nothing but mischief in mind. For the officer to resign is a disgrace on the black community. It only shows that the n****rs not b****s have no respect for anyone, including themselves.

THE STATE OF RELIGION: DECLINING BELIEF IN GOD WORLDWIDE

By Brian Magee

Two recent studies released almost simultaneously provide more hard evidence that religion is slowly losing its grip on humanity, even in the United States.

First, a report from the University of Chicago called “Belief About God Across Time and Countries” looked at survey data from 30 countries, reaching as far back as 1991. While many of the news stories about this report focused on figures showing a tendency for numbers of religious believers to increase with age, the figures also showed the overall percentage of religious believers declined in most countries, showing an increase in only three:

“…the % saying they were atheists increased in 15 of 18 countries from 1991 to 2008 with an average increase of 1.7 percentage points. For 1998 to 2008, atheists grew in 23 of 30 countries for an average gain of 2.3 points. Conversely … certain belief in God declined in 14 of 18 countries from 1991 to 2008 with an average decrease of 2.4 points and from 1998 to 2008 loses occurred in 24 of 30 countries for a similar average decline of 2.4 points. Likewise … never believing in God rose in 14 of 17 countries from 1991 to 2008 for an average increase of 1.6 points and increased in 20 of 29 countries from 1998 to 2008 by an average gain of 2.2 points.”
Second, a study called “The State of the Bible 2012” done by the Barna Group for the American Bible Society found that Americans are losing interest in the Bible. In just one year, the number of people who said they read the Bible to be “closer to God” dropped 9 percentage points from 64% in 2011 to 55% in 2012. Results show a drop from 75% to 69% of people who said “the Bible contains everything a person needs to know to live a meaningful life.” Those people who agreed that the Bible has “too much influence” in U.S. society increased from 13% to 16%, while those who thought the Bible had “too little influence” dropped from 54% to 47%.

While these figures are only for the span of a single year, the changes indicated are not small for such a short period of time. Additional surveys will need to be done to show a permanent trend, but other recent studies have given us similar results. For example, the ongoing State of the States survey by Gallup found in 2011 that 40% of Americans are “very religious,” down from 65% in 2008. And new research on the Millennials—those between the ages of 18 and 29—show a 20 percent decline from those who were raised Christians and now no longer consider themselves such.

What’s happening here? Because results of surveys like these show a great deal of variation based on age and geography, reasons to explain overall trends will be varied. But the results raise some interesting possibilities to consider, including something as simple as bad behavior, hypocrisy, and outlandish assertions on the part of those who claim most publicly and proudly to be religious believers. The areas that those who claim to be religious fail to shine include child abuse scandals, open L**T discrimination and support for bullying, attacks on women’s rights, support for war, pushing for religion in science classrooms, prayer-led public meetings, denying the separation of church and state, withholding medical care in favor of prayer for children … and the list goes on.

Religious-based bad behavior is not limited to the U.S., of course. We’ve been witnessing a worldwide phenomenon of bad behavior coming from adherents of all of the world’s major religions. Everything from death for blasphemy to claims of seeing religious figures in everyday objects only ads to a growing worldwide skepticism about religion as a valid framework for humanity to consider. Cases of bad political and criminal behavior from people who are aligned with those in religious groups are also part of the mix that drives people away from religion. The recent rants of Ted Nugent and mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik are prominent examples.

One thing’s for sure: humanists are poised to reach out to the growing number of “nones” and show humanism as the reason-based alternative to traditional religion. It’s an opportunity that all of us working for the freethought movement can’t afford to miss.

Brian Magee is the communications associate for the American Humanist Association.

J, since those who love themselves more than anything else i.e. atheists are on the rise why is the bible still the best selling Book in the world? Just something to ponder.

An anti-Muslim activist is planning a "Draw Muhammad" cartoon contest and rally Friday at a Phoenix mosque.

The event is being dubbed a "Freedom of Speech Rally" and comes three weeks after a similar event in Garland, TX., that prompted violence by two alleged ISIS sympathizers who attended the mosque.
The president of the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix said he has been notified by Phoenix police and the FBI about the event. Usama Shami said he respects the protesters' right to free speech.

"Everybody has a right to be a bigot. Everybody has a right to be a r****t. Everybody has a right to be an i***t," Shami said. He added that members of the mosque have been encouraged to attend prayer services Friday evening as scheduled.

"It will be the same as every Friday evening and we're going to tell our members what we've told them before: not to engage them," said Shami. "They're not looking for an intellectual conversation. They're looking to stir up controversy and we're not going to be a part of it."

The organizer of the event, Jon Ritzheimer, has held two protests in Phoenix since the Texas shootings. The chants and slogans at the protests are brash and h**eful. Some supporters wear t-shirts that state, "(expletive) Islam." Ritzheimer says he is using provocative methods to draw attention to a religion he believes at its core promotes violence.
"I want this to be about pushing out the t***h about Islam," said Jon Ritzheimer. "I've read the Koran three times... the ones flying the planes into the tower, those are Muslims following the book as it is written."
A Facebook page dedicated to the event, titled "Freedom of Speech Rally Round II," states: "This will be a PEACEFUL protest in front of the Islamic Community Center in Phoenix AZ… Everyone is encouraged to bring American f**gs and any message that you would like to send to the known acquaintances of the 2 gunmen."
Phoenix roommates Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi drove to Texas and shot a security guard during the May 3 "Draw Muhammad" contest there. Police shot and k**led the two men.
Simpson and Soofi attended the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix until 2010 and, according to mosque leaders, never expressed extremist or violent views while attending during that time.
The Facebook announcement for the rally also encourages participants to "utilize their second amendment right at this event just in case our first amendment right comes under the much anticipated attack."
As of Wednesday afternoon, the website showed 131 people confirming their attendance.
One Facebook post on the page states, "Death to Islam! No coexistence!" Another comment states, "I am proud to be part of this rally and will continue to be a part of it until we have the freedom that all our vets and current military fight for!!! This is my way of joining their efforts!"
Phoenix police declined to comment about security measures for the protest.
Muslims consider images of the Prophet Muhammad offensive for various reasons. They compare drawn depictions of the religious figure to how Christians might view the burning of a cross.
