The two worst thing that ever happened to Christianity was first, The Protestant Reformation. Within 80 years after the Reformation there were over 200 competing Christian sects, denominations, cults, etc. St. John Chrysostom said that schism is worse than heresy because it divides the people of Christ. Today in America there are over 25,000 denominations, sects, and sub-sects all using the same basic scripture with a multitude of different and competing interpretations. Luther added words and took out words of scripture to fit his particular interpretations. He abolished the epistle of James because it, too, conflicted with his opinions. If you believe the Inquisition was bad it has nothing on the heretics the Protestants burned in the name of Christian love.

The second worst Christian disaster was "the great schism in 1054." This was the split between the Western Church, Rome, and the Eastern Church which would become the Orthodox Churches. The only branch of Christianity not affected by the Reformation, then and now, is the Orthodox Church which are the only churches to keep and practice the faith once delivered by Christ to the apostles. Your statement that the Ethiopian Church is not the same as a protestant church is 100% correct. It is, however, very much an ancient Traditional Christian community.
