My grandfather survived the Bataan Death March. He was awarded a medal as a Colonel in the US Army by the Phillipine military. He was not Phillipino. I meant him only once in the very early 1960's on his death bed.

I am so happy your grandfather survived. I am so disappointed so few people even know What, Who, Where Bataan is.
My uncle survived the march and 3 years as a POW in Japan. When he was returned 6'1" and 85 lbs he was hospitalized for 3 months. You might think he had enough but no he finished his 20 to retirement. Passed away in 1976. Sorry to say, never got to meet him.

Not at all boring B B.
And thank you for your service. Boring ? Heck no, you helped save the world !

Boring my foot!!!!
You did enough for 5 sailors.
I read your epic piece and put ship hull numbers on wherever I remembered. USS Pennsylvania (BB-41). USS Ticonderoga(CV 14). I could look up the other hull numbers but used your story as a memory jogger instead. Sounds like your t***sport was an APD. I don't know the hull number of the tug.
Let me tell you really about boring.

As written previously on another thread, sworn in the USN, 5 Dec 1951. Straight to Great Lakes for boot camp. Learned the moves of chess pieces on Christmas day.
Left Great Lakes via troop train to Little Creek, Virginia for further t***sfer to the Uss Thuban (AKA-19). (Attack cargo ship) Think about Jeff Chandler in "Away all Boats".
For the next 4 years we took Fleet Marines to Vieques, Puerto Rico for beach assault training. Later recovered said Marines. Did this about 10 times over the 4 years. Two things broke up the pattern. In 1955, reenlisted for 4 years while in Havana, Cuba.
In 1953, got underway for Morehead City, NC to pick up the 2nd Marine Division from LeJuene, NC. Underway in convoy with carriers to also take the Marine air wing from Cherry Point, NC. Arrived in Yokohama,Japan with our troops headed for Korea. We picked up and returned rotated personnel back to Norfolk, VA.
In 1955 did a resupply for the DEW line cruise to Northern Hudson Bay. Crossed Arctic Circle a few times.
Left Thuban for shore duty in Annapolis, MD for 2 years. That duty involved engineering watches on craft used to train Mdishipmen in ship handling, tactics and the like.
When my tour was up, volunteered for submarines. Was accepted and went to enlisted sub school in New London, CT via Class C Engineman school in Great Lakes,IL
Reported to Submarine Squadron 10 to report to USS Skate. She was out so was assigned to USS Entemedor(SS-340).
I spent my next 3 years riding her on European places and the Mediterranean, etc. Qualified in 1958. Discharged in 1961( 54 years ago yesterday.
Please permit one last remark. May God give Eternal Rest for those who didn't make it back.

Since the Packer's crash and burn, my TV is on unpaid vacation until the first pre-season game in Sept. I am serious. I watch nothing. Should I weaken, I might try the Discovery Channel.
What a waste of time!! And it shows. In most conversations, out comes the brilliant question, "Know what I saw (or watched) on TV last night?" Nothing about any scientific discoveries, mankind accomplishments or the like. The word "shallow" comes to mind.
Do people do anything except seek entertainment on TV?
Sorry for the grouch but it does bug me.

Re the SNL attacks on 10 year old Barron Trump.
Don't the people that run the networks remember they have a license to broadcast and like any license can be jerked.
I have never read the conditions for licensing but I can just about assure attacking a 10 year old on national TV is outside the rules.
If I were a stockholder in the network who airs SNL I think I would be worried about my dividend check. Messing with the president's kid ain't the smartest move when it would likely take a phone call to the head of the FCC to straighten all that out. I am aware times change but hopefully we haven't slid so far that it is ok to do this stuff.

how old were you when you enlisted EN?
I was barely sixteen
born August 1926

date of birth 10/29/34. I was in the Recruiting office 10/27/1951. When asked my age, I told them, "I'll be 17 Monday" I gave them what probably was the easiest recruitment of their careers. Sworn in 5 Dec 1951. Headed for Great Lakes by train that evening. Honorably discharged 23 Jan 1961 (56 years ago to the day). Did 4 more years in active reserve, 14 total and some change.

Was your uncle drafted? A war casuality? May he RIP regardless.
I had an uncle who survived the Bataan Death March and 3 years in the copper mines in Japan.
A cousin shot down and MIA in South Pacific as a gunner on a B-25 in 1942.

I have to admit, I had an insight on many of the items on the quiz. I began 1st grade the month Germany invaded Poland.
Was visiting relatives after church on 7 Dec 1941 and heard about Pearl after returning home to the battery powered Atwater-Kent console radio.
Further, was called in from chores to listen to the broadcast from Normandy on 6 June 1944.
I remember rationing, scrap drives, War Bond drives, etc. WWII was not fun for anyone. The nature of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not revealed at the time. Lived in a farming community but there was a shortage of help because people were driving to Kingsport or Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Kingsport due to the wartime expansion of Eastman kodak and Oak Ridge because of building the facility for the centrifuges to separate the isotopes of Uranium for the nuke bombs.
If anyone has questions, just ask and I will give you my best shot.

Subject: Twas the night before inauguration

Twas the Night Before Inauguration!

Twas the night before Inauguration, and up in the tower,
The Donald reflected on his newfound power.
The conservative masses had come out in force,
And delivered a victory that would chart a new course.

The snowflakes were shell-shocked with tears in their eyes,
The media lied to them . . . What a surprise.
They had been promised a Hillary win,
But the criminal Clinton took one on the chin.

And though from all corners celebrities flew,
They made no impression, for they hadn’t a clue.
They talked about climate, r****m, and such,
And they made up good stories . . . But didn’t know much.

The f**e news and ignorance came at a cost,
And they can’t understand all the reasons they lost.
They blame it on Comey and Bernie and Vlad,
But fail to acknowledge the one that was bad.

Yes, Hillary Clinton, in many ways flawed,
Was her own biggest hurdle toward getting the nod.
The campaign exposed her corruptness and greed,
And her speeches were punch-less as ten dollar weed.

So out in the streets there arose such a clatter,
It was Soros-paid protestors and Black L***s M****r.
With cities to pillage and windows to smash,
They knew not the issues, but needed the cash.

Eight years of Obama had given them cause,
To expect a replacement of their Santa Claus.
But soon the protestors will feel the pain,
When the wheels fall off of the old gravy train.

And now all the snowflakes are riddled with fear,
Upset and offended by things that they’ll hear.
The cocoa and crayons will help for a while,
But fact-based opinions will soon cramp their style.

I originally supported, and v**ed, for Cruz,
In the end, I would v**e for whoever they choose.
He wasn’t my first choice, but soon I would cede,
The one they call Trump is the one that we need.

I saw him on TV in front of a crowd,
He spoke about veterans, it made me feel proud.
He spoke about energy, safety, and jobs,
Taking this country back from the Washington snobs.

He was dressed in Armani, all tailored and neat,
And the Brunos he wore made the outfit complete.
For a man of his vintage, he seemed rather fit,
And he looked p**********l, I have to admit.

His eyes glowed like embers, his smile was the best,
And his hair was the color of my old hunting vest.
His love for this country was on full display,
And his actions spoke louder than his words could say.

He thanked all his v**ers, and before he was gone,
Saved thousands of jobs while Obama looked on.
The fate of this country left nothing to chance,
So, he filled out his cabinet weeks in advance.

The men he had chosen were of the same mind,
Let’s set the bar high, and not lead from behind.
He picked up his phone as he rose from his seat,
With a flick of his finger, he sent out this tweet;

“Now Mattis!, now Kelly!’ now Sessions! And Pruitt!
On Perry! On Flynn, You’re the ones who can do it.
Start lifting restrictions and building the wall,
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”;

The roar of his audience rose from the stands,
He kissed all their babies and shook all their hands.
He answered their questions and calmed all their fears,
They knew it would be a fantastic four years.
Then he jumped in his limo, and off to his jet,

A fellow that Liberals won’t soon forget.
He sent one more tweet as the evening expired;
“Happy Inauguration to all,
AND OBAMA – YOU’RE FIRED!”

"There is a law put into place back in the 1970,s if I'm not mistaken, to not allow Muslims into our country. Am I wrong here? If I'm not then should be enforced PERIOD!!!!!!!! They have already caused too much damage.

I think the law was passed in 1953. And yes. Enforce it!!!

"There must have been 2 inaugurations. I saw the Fox positive one, too, not (never!) the CBS one."

The only program I ever watch regularly on tv is football. I always watch with the volume muted. After all I am watching it, why do I need someone to tell me what I'm looking at? Ditto with watching the events yesterday. Why would I listen to some lower colon opening tell me what I just heard or what he/she meant?
Maybe we have hit on it. Watchers who believe in the great misconception. Entertainers must be right, I saw it on tv. After all the opinions of the Hollyfreaks are best for us. Right? Nope, not with this boy.

"Why are there so many elected politicians in D.C. who are liars, career politicians? Because being lied-to is acceptable conduct to whoever v**ed for that person. THAT is the impact you make! Don't v**e for a liar and you won't have those liars in elected career politician jobs deciding YOUR life."

Firstly I think career politicians are inherently liars otherwise they would never be reelected.

Secondly, I think there is so much unseen activity that goes into winning an e******n that the average v**er does not have any idea of what is behind the scenes, v***r f***d, buying v**es as examples. There is always an agenda.
How many politicians deal with obvious problems? Crime, graft, poverty. Lip service, yep. Action, nope.
I can remember almost 60 years ago being warned to never travel alone in certain areas in Brooklyn when leaving or trying to return to our ship. Any improvement in the neighborhood? You know the answer.
