Ten Days Ago...I just finished serving my dad breakfast. He had biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs.

He said he was originally from Dearborn, Mich. I told him I wouldn't hold that against him. His wife however, he said, was a true Buckeye from Findlay, Ohio. He met Delores at a baseball game in 1951. They were married eight weeks later and four months after that he was fighting c*******m in Korea.

He and his wife had no children. Being 34 years old when he was sent to Korea, he said he had considered all of the younger guys in his Army unit his kids.

That day my dad was named Earl.

My title is FSW WG3 which stand for Food Service Worker, Wage Grade 3. I work at the Chillicothe, Ohio Veterans Administration Medical Center, the first Veteran's Bureau operated hospital in the U.S....admitting their first patient in June of 1924. Every day I prepare and serve our Veteran residents three nutritious meals. Most of the time they even say it tastes good, too.

Eight days ago...Lunch on the ward today was hectic. We had three new patients get processed right before I served chicken tenders and red skin potatoes. Being an intake ward, things can be a little off-center until the newbies get into our routine. Once I got them settled at our dining tables, they all three ate like they hadn't been fed in ages. I certainly knew that wasn't the case, but I was glad they liked our food.

One of the new patients was named Victoria. She said that I reminded her of her younger brother, David. I said well, he must be a handsome fella, then. She said he was, but he died a long time ago. I told her I was very sorry for her loss. She said that was OK. I told her my name was Dale and for the most part I would be the one serving her meals. She smiled and repeated that she had a younger brother named David and I reminded her of him. I said, "Thank you, Victoria."

The other two new patients we received today was a large Hispanic man named Manuel and a very thin and pale man who said I could call him Major. I didn't know if that was his name or his rank.

Despite the newbies, at the end of my shift I wanted to tell Victoria that I would see her later for dinner. So, after I cleaned my area and put on my coat, I walked over to where she was sitting in her wheelchair. I smiled at her and tipped her a little wave. She waved back and said, "Bye bye, David."

I came back to work today after two days off and I found out that 'my dad' had died last night. His name was Leon and he was a Vietnam Veteran from Columbus who had lost his right leg below the knee to a Viet Cong land mind. His son, he said, was named Virgil and the last he had of him he was a heroin addict living on the street in the Short North area of Columbus. We had talked before about music, (Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles), Art, (Jackson Pollock made his head hurt), and the fact that the Cleveland Browns always seemed to need a new quarterback. I truly enjoyed our talks. Leon had been 70 years old. I tried to remember exactly what the last thing we had talked about was, but, try as I might, I couldn't remember. I just hope it had been something at least a little comforting to him.

It has been three years since I lost my real dad. I took him to urgent care because he thought he had a pulled rib muscle or maybe a hernia, but turns out what he really had was lung cancer. That spring I learned new word combinations, thing like PET scan and surgical survivability. My dad was a former SeaBee in the U.S. Navy, but he rarely talked about those days. One time, I found a picture of him clowning around with his Navy buddies in a tropical setting; he looked so young and fit. He death certificate says he died of non-small cell carcinoma, but what really k**led him was the chemo and the radiation therapy. He started cancer treatment a man who would work in his garden and enjoyed bass fishing, but within a couple weeks his hair turned white and wispy and all his strength was gone. Soon he couldn't get out of bed. My father, James Robert Hall, was diagnosed with lung cancer during the first blooms of April and died with the first k*****g frost of November.

Two days ago...During dinner today, J.D., an 85-yr. old former Marine sergeant, knocked over his cup of milk creating a white lake on the table he shared with Manuel and Victoria. I could tell he was embarrassed about his increasing lack of motor control. Smiling, I grabbed towel and attack the mess. In a loud voice I said, "Hello! If that's the worst thing that happens today we will be alright." This must have resonated in some way with Victoria as she then burst into a rousing version of "Hello Dolly!" Even J.D. laughed and clapped when she was done With a grin, I shook my head...never a dull moment here.

This morning...It's 0620 and I am sitting in my truck in the parking lot of the Food Service building at work. I usually start my shift at 0700, but I wanted t come early today to finish this story while in the environment of the VA Medical Center. It seems fitting to me. It's dark and very foggy this morning, and even though I'm sitting within 25 yards of the residential buildings that house our long term veterans, I can barely make out the building's shapes in the early morning gloom. Even the bright lights standing tall outside the buildings are just a muted yellow glow. Viewing this scene, it's quite easy to imagine that an enemy patrol could slip silently out of the mist, armed to the teeth, looking to k**l innocent Americans. But, I'm certain that's not going to happen. I know that I am safe. The reason I know this is because at some time in their lives, all United State's Veterans...some that are right at this moment struggling to put on their sweaters or needing help to slide into their wheelchairs and are housed in the very buildings that I am now looking at...raised their right hand and swore an oath to protect this land against all enemies. Know some veterans fought and some didn't, but each and every one wrote the same blank check to the people of our country. This check was written for the amount up to and including their very lives. They each in their own way stood the line and said, "Not on my watch."

I, as well as my fellow co-workers, try to show our gratitude and appreciation for their efforts every minute of every day.

Well, I'm going to wrap this up. I see by my truck's dashboard clock that I need to head inside and begin my work day. It's time for me to go serve my dad breakfast. I just wonder what his name will be.

Great (somber) story. God bless all who served. Those who occupy places like this, and certainly those who barely got out of training and perished in their first action. And bless all those in between. All the veterans here on OPP seem proud to have served and we should be. America, with all it's flaws, is the greatest nation on the planet. Prayers for those who are nearing the end of their service (veterans never really stop serving). And a special prayer for those who will decide to serve in the future.

I just thought it was an interesting possible connection.
I've seen some of this guy's stuff before. When you stop and think about it, there is so much going on in the world today that is important, and no one is paying attention because instead of our news media reporting this kind of stuff, all we get is "Trump is Evil", "G****l w*****g is going to k**l us", and "Treat the asylum seekers with understanding and love". Meanwhile, things like this go on without anyone knowing what's going on. It's kinda scary. I'm going to have nightmares about stuff going on all over the world at a depth of 6.2 miles...

Please explain. My comment was that just saying "If we were to take away insurance cost and put it to universal healthcare it would pay for itself" doesn't make it true. Your "dividends" matter how?

And who did it wind up being a huge subsidy to? The private, for profit health INSURANCE corporations that extract $600 BILLION from the US health CARE system each year. Take them out of the equation and Medicare for ALL becomes affordable, NOT FREE, but AFFORDABLE. Those that will still get their health CARE for free are already getting it for free.
Alexandria Ocasio Cortes. I'm honored that you'd respond to my comment! After all, like you've said before, "If money doesn't grow on trees, why do banks have branches?" Look buffalo, you have half a point here. The insurance companies have enormous power and always seem to make out no matter what we try but health insurance sold in a marketplace with competition for pricing is the only way for it to be affordable. Medical costs, like everything the government gets involved in are needlessly high. If you truly want the US to become a socialist country keep turning to the government for solutions because as we all know, the government is efficient, trustworthy, and can police itself when needed. Give me a break! Yes, that was sarcasm!

No, but it was highly subsidized by the folks forced to sign up and by expanding federal medical coverage.

Fighting it will cause medicare for all or a single payer system
It's pretty obvious that the ACA, Obamacare, wh**ever was designed to force the country toward a single payer plan. It was never designed to succeed. It made it's way into law through subterfuge and lies (no need to repeat them all here). The designers knew it wasn't sustainable, but that by giving something to those who didn't have it before, they knew those people would then insist on keeping their new entitlement. It's the standard game-plan with all government handouts. If you can just get it established some way, it's difficult to reverse. They also knew that the ultimate cost of a single-payer program would throw the economy into chaos. Obama was many things, but ignorant isn't one. His plan to bring the US down and force it to accept UN or EU/Global control was (and is) a devious one. The thing that enrages me is how many people there are in power who are fine with that goal and have worked hard to implement this anti-American plan.

President Donald Trump’s “latest offering of offal” about v***r f***d drew sharp criticism from CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday night.
The “Cuomo Prime Time” host said Trump’s baseless allegation that some people donned disguises in order to v**e multiple times actually came from Alex Jones’ far-right conspiracy theory-promoting website Infowars.
“The only thing anything like it is this tripe from Infowars,” said Cuomo. “Now before you say ‘how could you even mention Infowars?’, remember the White House used doctored video from those fools to make a false case against a CNN reporter.”
https://www.yahoo.com/news/chris-cuomo-shows-donal... (show quote)
So you bash the "far-right conspiracy theory-promoting website Infowars" (which was pushed into banishment by CNN pressure for continually exposing CNN's staged video reports) for daring to contradict the "far-left f**e news promoting CNN". That sounds about right.

The 1st 3 were busted by Infowars, but those video-reports are long gone (courtesy of CNN and others to push YouTube to k**l the accounts).

But by all means, Bad Bob - you go on and tout CNN. The two of you produce roughly the same amount of t***hiness:

Well, I looked at it and viewed it's opinion on several sites including Snopes (least biased), Just Facts (slightly to moderately conservative), Amnesty International (least biased), Southern Poverty Law Center (slight to moderate liberal bias). I browsed through the list of "Conspiracy-P***********e" entries. And my opinion is that the website is doing a really good job of shifting many things "right" by degrees.

Snopes is "least biased" along with Amnesty International? Horse Hockey!
SPLC is "slightly to moderately liberal"?

It's interesting that when I look at sites rated conservative and there seems to be less "fudging" going on, since they've already been identified as conservative. But liberal sites are definitely rated centrist (least biased) when they are in my estimation slightly to moderately liberal, and some of those that are rated slightly to moderately liberal are decidedly socialist in nature.

So, I'm back to my original opinion. When you consider who pretty much owns the traffic on the internet and how they lean, is it any wonder that conservatives need to dig harder to find what they're looking for? If you haven't yourself seen the bias, you may not realize how easy it is for our liberal friends to find "facts" that are pushed to the top of Google searches so they don't have to read through 20 articles in order to find the one that supports their argument.

Examples:
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-09-12/google-bias

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-01-09/if-google-is-biased-so-are-its-algorithms

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/12/technology/facebooks-bias-is-built-in-and-bears-watching.html

https://gizmodo.com/former-facebook-workers-we-routinely-suppressed-conser-1775461006

There are so many more, and you'll note a couple of the sources should be acceptable to anyone who is "slightly to moderately liberal". I myself have seen actual examples on Google of their hard left bias (like when you googled Trump or Hillary pre Nov 2016). Or when they stopped showing links for certain firearm videos or links for shopping for firearms and accessories. And there are literally hundreds of instances of conservative users or sites being shadow banned or shut-down while liberal sites are allowed to post very objectionable information and opinions.

And heading into 2020 things are going to get worse before they get better simply because of who controls things. So buckle up friends and take p***e in your willingness to dig harder for your info. It's just another way to show the left that we mean what we say and we walk the walk!
