Today marks the 179th Anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. That is the decisive battle that won Texas independence from Mexico and the dictator Santa Anna. The 'Texicans' of the time led their charge upon the encamped Mexican army with shouts of 'Remember the Alamo' & 'Remember Goliad'...two battles won by Santa Anna's forces prior to San Jacinto. Texican forces in those engagements had been totally annihilated.

Texas became an independent nation soon thereafter. It was short-lived, however, as we annexed the United States less than ten years later.

Two unnecessary battles in an unnecessary war. Madness! Frkn insanity! And we ignore that for medals and property gained. Disgusting!

I went to high school just down the road from Gilley's...at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas. Gilleys was already big before the movie 'Urban Cowboy', with John Travolta came out, but that really put it on the map. Mickey Gilley, though a good entertainer, IMO, was lacking in social skills among the general public the few times I ran into him as a teenager and young man back from VietNam. Most know his cousins were Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart. All were very talented musicians and self-promoters born in Louisiana.

No, it closed down sometime around 1990, and a fire attributed to arson burnt down most of the still remaining nightclub. The last standing remnants of the establishment were sold to the local school district in 2006. In 2003, Gilleys had re-opened in Dallas, where, as far as I know, it is still open for business. One of the few things brought there from the original Gilley's was the mechanical bull made famous in the movie 'Urban Cowboy'. I have never been to the Dallas club. I stay out of urban areas as much as possible since retirement.

Word has been that Mickey Gilley was planning a resurrection of the old club in the Pasadena area at some point in time, though I don't think he has yet.

I lived right down the highway in Pasadena/Deer Park, Texas during my high school years, and visited both on a regular basis. We also used to go crabbing in the nearby pools and bayous. You are correct, it is a good spot for a family outing.

Lived in Angleton back in the mid 80's when oil was king. Then oil went BUST! Had to move back to New England. Loved the weather down there.
