Devil's Advocate (hoping Loki will edify, correct and expand)

Playing the Devil's Advocate is not a game; it is an earnest and uncompromising search for truth that deeply and seriously challenges all our beliefs. But how is that possible or right or good? If I take the Gospel to be such and such as truth, as proven in my mind by scripture, how or why should I argue against it unless to provide a foothold for Satan? Playing the Devil's Advocate seems a devil's game. One to create doubt or question. A liberal folly to undermine certainty in and support for reliable dogma and theology, tradition. The truth shall set you free: why challenge it? Why not?

Loki has to go to the grocery store. Edifications, expansions and corrections as deemed necessary in due course. First things first, and I have a pot roast to marinate. Oven or Crockpot? Shiraz or merlot? should I break out some of my frozen homemade Sauce Espagnole? It's tough when you have these earth-shattering decisions to make.

I say for a pot roast use Zinfandel - the spicy notes are great for that cut and the slow cooking. Or go for a Pinot Noir, which is the main grape for Burgundies, and essential for that French pot roast, Boeuf Bourguignon.
As a little addendum, I came across this little cartoon below, and of course thought immediately of our friend Loki and his extraordinary linguistic skills!

I mentioned previously; I used to be on a debating team in college. Theprofessor felt that if you expected a passing grade, you had to be able to mount a vociferous defense of a position or situation that you personally found odious. Due in no small part to my big mouth and natural truculence, I found myself being "Mr. Vociferous" frequently.
People who make an honest effort at playing "Devil's Advocate" frequently have pretty ironclad opinions, simply because they have honestly examined a subject from at least two different perspectives. At the risk of offending Hegelian affecionados, there is often much more than a thesis, antithesis and synthesis involved in reaching a satisfactory conclusion.
There can be no accurate conclusion reached if Devil's Advocacy is not practiced. I have, more than once, changed my mind from a first impression or opinion.
Doubts and questions are an integral and indispensible part of the process of arriving at the truth. Thusly doth Loke render his opinion.
